Was doing a little huckin yesterday and noticed engine started to lose power...soon after, it just quit. Temps yesterday were 100-102 and really humid (humidity at 5 PM was 73%). Found the piston ring was in 4 pieces...engine kind of new (< 2 gallons), and I was running 40:1 break-in oil. ???????? was it just the heat, or is there a history anyone knows of for the Evolutions blowing the rings ???????? |

Greyhound Man, a guy on FG had his blow up in his 30% Yak, I think it is a heat related thing. I am breaking in my DA 50 for a seccond time after having it blow the cylender off. Do I need to worry about the heat? I thought it would be ok to just go out and run 32:1 lawnboy oil right away in 100 degree weather, it will be atleast 90 for several more weaks, is that alright or do you have to wait for the weather to cool down, that would really suck though..... |

Just don't 3D it when it's this hot and you'll be OK. Practice IMAC with it or something. That will keep speed on it to help keep it cool, plus it will help it break in faster. You may want to richen the needles a tiny bit too.

I know enough not to hover for 5 minutes on the first tank, but I am saying, any kind of flying in 100 degree weather, with 100 degree wind blowing on the engine......... Have you ever done this??? I would love to know because it blew up in 100 degree weather and I dont intend to have it blow up again. |

My 58 BLEW UP TWICE NOW IN UNDER 2 WEEKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() The first time it ate the ring...last saturday, around 100 deg temp outside, broke the ring in two pieces, sent it in they replaced the piston, ring, carb, and base gasket, got it back in 4 business days. this weekend I got it remounted and test ran the engine at home. It ran for less than one minute, there is now a gash down the side of the piston 1/8 of an inch wide by 1 1/2 inches long and when I say gash I mean GASH! I can see through to the connecting rod. I have less than 5 gallons through the 58 and frequently temp the engine after runs and have never had a run much over 180. and running it at 40:1 amsoil dominator, and by the residue it leaves on the bottom of the plane it was rich after a days flying it looked almost as bad as a slimer. i could be wrong, but i dont think the outside temp has anything to do with it. i mean the motor temp is way higher than that. i'am not saying its not a cooling problem. but i just dont think the outside air temp will cause a motor to blow up. if thats the case i would never get to fly in the summer.

i never hover for 5 min - what for - run the new engine in properly and then set it right and it will almost last for ever - we have engines over 25 years old and they still run - do it right day one and they will last - fact

The outside air temp shouldn't affect it that bad, look for another problem, either lean or an issue with the engine, sometimes manufacturers get a "bad run" of parts, that's what happened with the DA Fitty, bad lot of crank pins. Tom |

I agree with looking for another cause. Alot of people are having problems with rings in the evo's. Not all of them are 58's, and not all of them are flying in the same weather, so it has to be bad parts, IMO.

LOTS of people have had reed/carb issues and or blown the rings. I have seen so many posts on this. My 58 had the reed/carb issue and is now running okay (for now.) Horizon support is great when they have parts - just send it back and they will fix/replace it. I know of 2 people who were sent V2 engines after the rings blew with 5+ gallons on the engine. The bearings are fragile too - so its best to stick to the recommended 40:1 oil ratio. Chris. |
