Default DA50 and MTW cannisters

Hi,

I am looking into this combo for my YAK but would like to get info from anyone who has experience with them. Is ther a performance hit? If so how much? What prop combination? etc etc...

Thanks

Azhar

cannisters dont add power in my experince. If you want power use the stock DA muffler.

I have a TOC Yak 54 with a Da-50 with a mtw "FatBoy" cannister. And it does add power. Also reduces noice. I am also running a 22-8 prop

Plankbone,

I am going to use it on the TOC Yak too. My main goal is noise reduction. How does yours fly? What kind of rpms are you getting?

I have two DA 50s with the MTW can. Both engines turn a mez.22x10, 300 rpm more with the stock muffler. The can is quiet at lower throttle but WOT is as loud as a muffler. Any how I like hearing the prop RIPPPPPPP.

A muffler wont make your prop quiet.

The 300 rpm increase with a stock muffler? Maybe your header length is to long.

MTW can is not a tuned pipe, header length aint got nothing to do with it. Who said a muffler would stop prop rip?

Guys,

I am not expecting power increase. As pointed out, it is not a tuned pipe. But interested to know the power loss, if any. My goal is to cut back on the noise with as little power loss as possible.

Header length will effect power on the mtw pipe. You and a header and an expansion chamber on the muffler, there is an effect. You don't see the huge rpm change that a full wave pipe will give but with the correct header length you wont loose power.

The mtw is quieter at WOT if you don't include the prop noise.

Thunder,

How do you calculate the correct header length?

I believe the stock DA header (wrap around) is at 11.5" and it is tuned for MTW TD75K canister. It is ideal length but if space is limited, you can cut up to 1" safely without adverse effect. AT 2" or more cut, you will have no transition or on/off condition and it will not be good for 3d flying (ie hover, harrier)

I had that setup on Aerotech Yak and vertical pullout was impressive compared to slimline equiped bird.
