Default Hanger 9, 46% Ultimate Build

Hi all

I am building a Hanger 9, 46% Ultimate. I am still waiting on the kit but am getting a few bits and pieces together while I wait.
I got the motor the other day, a DA-150, compact exhausts etc...
The kit could still take a couple of months to come from America so am making a start getting the stuff together.
What hardware do I require eg. hindges, control horns, fuel tank, wheels, servos, powerbox, smoke system, bolts-screws etc.... ?
What would you recommend, what does the kit contain ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Glenn

Hi Glenn. The H9 Ultimate is a very impressive aircraft. Here's how I would set it up:

DA150 STD muffs and one of those sweet DA fuel dots

Rocket City 10-32 horns

Du-Bro 50 or 40 oz fuel tank

Du-Bro 5" lite wheels

JR 8611A servos with 1.25 SWB "double lock" arms

Powerbox... You can.. IMHO there are just another thing to fail. I would recommend a Fromeco power system www.fromeco.org I would use two 4800 "Peerless" packs going through their adjustable regulators into two Badger switches. This is the setup I use and its bulletproof

Smoke system.. not sure. I know Don Harris is the best if you can find one. I think there not produced anymore

Good luck and welcome to the Flying Giants

The Kroma 180 would have been an awesome engine for that plane.

The DA 150 will be just fine. Just do what you can to keep it light. Like mentioned above a powerbox is not necessary, but personal preference. I also prefer the fromeco setup as well. I would recommend the hitec 5955s with swb arms, the JR 8611s geartrain is lacking desire, and gets sloppy really fast, but dont have that problem with the hitecs.

Hi Adrian

With the 5955's how do you go about syncronizing the servos and setting the end points? The JR servos are done with matchbox's!
Secondly the 5955's are rated @24kg/6V, on the rudder would I still require 4 ganged or only 3?
Finally are the ailerons, elevator and rudder already hinged or do I need to get hindges and If so what type?

Regards Glenn

I have purchased the rocket city horns in the past from www.nelsonhobby.com and http://www.donshobbyshop.com

The Hitec digis are programmable servos. There is a setup box that you use to set them up and store the program

You can program the hitecs and get them perfect, or you can use matchboxes on them as well. The correct way is to program each servo exactly the same, for example, center (90 degrees to the case) and then program the ends points, I program mine at 60 degrees. From there, you adjust the linkages and horns mechanically to get them all to line up and to meet at the endpoints. When you do this, you have absolutely 0 binding through the entire range of motion. I only say this because I see guys hook up their linkages, and program the servos to move the surface the same amount, then you have one servo moving 60 degrees, one moving 50 degrees, etc.

Adrian: you said your Ultimate was 43lbs with a DA150? Do you find that is a bit much for the DA? how does it pull out of a hover? How are the uplines?

Tank you is wrong. The amount up and down is the important thing. If the control horn is not dead on the center line then the servo will move a different amount of degrees to move the surface the same up or down. Also the servo arm does not have to be 90 degrees to the case. On a tappered ailerion if you have all the servos moving the same degrees then you are a bindding the hell out of everything.
