I'm pretty sure it's the horsepower rating of the engine, or the engine model number.

Depends on the company...... Engine rating, sequence number, even roll rate has been used.....

Edge 540 - Lycoming IO540 engine
Cap 580 - IO580
Extra's are horsepower designations 230, 260, 300 HP.

Yup, the IO-540 and IO-580 in the engine displacement in cubic inches. The HP will vary. My "old" 580 was 330 HP, my brand new 580 is 357 HP. As mentioned, the Extra goes by HP in it name. (their are a few exceptions, but no need to go there)
Now, take the MX-2...is that 2 hp or 2 cubic inches????

No, no...not at all. Just kidding. The plane is a real rocket ship. Very light, VERY fast...
Give it time and it will become a contender, maybe. Never an Edge, but it will do ok. Might be a good Red Bull plane.
