Hey everyone I'm about to build a trailer to haul my plane in. Right now I only have one plane that is a 28% extra thats 77" in length. I'm trying to think ahead and build a trailer that would haul a 35% and maybe a 40%. What I dont want to end up with is a trailer to short for plane that I might grow in to later on. What I need to know is what's the longest plane( like a Extra,Yak, etc... in length up to a 40%)? Thanks in advance Shaun DSC03776.JPG DSC03802.JPG |

You need at least 117in in length for a good 40-42% er. Width is about 48in, unless you want to take the stabs off. So with that said.........10ft long will work and you need to be as wide at those tires. The wedge is already there on the frame so use it to cut drag. My trailer is 4x10 and my 42% will fit with 2in in length to spare and will fit with stabs with like a 1/4in to spare (not enough to feel safe so I'm taking the stabs off) |

Thanks Sweat Pea, The width from fender to fender is 51", So I thought I would try to get as much of that as I could with out it rubbing the fenders. 10' would make it fit just about right to the existing trailer.I was thinking the samething as you about the front being "V" shaped to cut down on the wind resistance. I'll probably make sure I have enough room to mount a spare tire on the front frame, and then cut the extra off the front tilt portion of the trailer off. I had a friend that made one that had a fan hooked up to a solar panel that would automaticly come on when it got to hot inside the trailer. I'll have to look in to that,I thought it was a pretty neat idea. Thanks again RS |

just mount the tire under the trailer. That's where mine is at. I saw a thread (can't remember where) and the guy cut some slots in the floor to accept the fenders of the trailer to the inside. this may work to give you more room. I've seen those fans also. Pretty cool. |

thats a great idea, making cutouts in the floor! just make sure you can still get the wheels of the trailer on and off!

I am thinking of doing the same thing with a Harbor Freight 4'X8' utility trailer. I can get one for $300, throw some larger tires on it and build a box outa ply for well under a grand. We'll have to call them the workin' man's trailers!

Bodywork that's a great deal on a trailer.I had this one given to me about 3 or 4 years ago but I'm just now getting around to building it. In order to get 10' long I'll have to weld a couple more supports on the at the front. I think the 28% that I currently fly the 51" would be wide enough for now. If I built around the fenders then I would gain 7 1/2" on each side. For a total of 66 1/2". I'll have to sit down with my plane and a tape measure to see if it would be a good idea to have it wider. If I happened to move up to a 35% at a later point and time.Something else to keep in mind is would I abe to get a 35% AND a 28% for a back up in the trailer at the same time. RS | |||||||||||||||

Hey, I just found a home trailer made with about the design I was thinking about. I thought I would post a couple pictures of it. The only difference I can see right off hand would be the lack of the "V" nose. I was thinking about keeping it simple with no side doors too. By having two pull outs for a plane on top, and a plane on the bottom to ride on.When you get to the field you could easily accesses the planes by pulling them out on rollers.
