Default DA 50 CHOKE

I have a DA 50 engine that I have just installed in an aviation models 30% Yak.

I have it all setup and the throttle servo in place with a great linkage setup but I am sort of mystified as to how I need to setup the choke.

I have used a choke servo in the past and it worked fine but I want this plane to be light, I am not going to put a choke servo in it this time.

I could make a trip to home depot, struggle with un-tightening the standoffs from the engine that were screwed on there with red locktite and work for 30+ minutes making a sturdy manual choke setup but is this really necessary? I have no time and really don’t want to do it.

I heard snapasarus Elie say that he never uses a choke, he just closes the throttle all the way and flips it a couple of extra times, this sounds marvelous but will it work for DA 50's has anyone ever done this?

I would think that closing the throttle all the way would block off the airflow to the cylinder just like the choke would, it just wouldn’t block off the airflow to the center of the carb, is this what needs to be done by the choke or will just closing the throttle all the way work?

Thanks a bunch.

You can either just run it out the front of the cowl or use a aileron bellcrank and run it out of the bottom of the cowl.

I have thought those things over, I guess I just want to know if you can manage starting the engine cold without choking it.

The 30% AM yak with a DA50 is going to need a bunch of nose weight...use a servo on the choke to make it easy to operate and help with balancing.

I have built one before and know about the nose weight, my engine is real far forweard with maybe 1.5''+ for prop clearance from the cowl so I need not worry about nose weight, everthing is on the firewall.

I guess I will just have to make a manuel choke, how hard is it to untighten bolts that have been red loctited and screwed hard, is there anything I should watch out for, hope I dont strip them out, or my allen wrench.

WTF is wright, even the batteries need to be up front to balance the yak, I use a servo on the choke and that works with out adding any lead.

After the first start of the day I normally don't need to choke again. But for the first start I've never been able to start my DA-50 without the choke. Maybe if you do what snapasarus Elie does then open the throttle back up after a few extra flips. I'll have to give it a try Thursday morning.

I just made a tool (a 1/16" allen wrench glued to a piece of dowel about 8" long) that I stuck in the cowl from the front, flipped the choke on and removed the tool. No added weight at all.

When I had my DA 50, I used a nyrod and routed it out the belly of the plane behind the cowl (you could put it where is is convienent). This was minimal for weight and really easy to do.
