Default flying in the cold

hey huckers,

i have a problem. my wife is finnish. she wants to move to finland (taking me with her). i have never flown in weather colder than 15 deg celcius.

the million dollar question is if i fly in freezing weather, will the cold affect the plane.

ie servos freezing up, will a gas engine start?

i just dont know?

I've never had the cold effect my airplane or the electronics. The engine might have to have the needle adjusted a little for the air density difference in the cold weather.

One thing you will need to keep an eye on is, if you are flying any composite planes or have fiberglass parts, the cold will make them brittle, land gently...

Get's pretty cold in Finland...

i just went flying a few days ago here im Milwaukee WI and i can tell you it is no fun. you will have to play with your low and high end valves because of the change in air density which doesnt sound bad until your had is in the prop-wash for 15 min. they turn a greyish blue color and then.........fall the hell off. then you finaly get it started and i can get my hands to reach absolute zero when holding the radio.

i work outside 8-12 hours a day at the airport in windy, rainy, snowy, loud, and horrid conditions and i would rather do that than fly in the cold. im sure a lot of guys do it but ill stick to watching ping-pong on ESPN all winter.

Flying in the cold sucks. I once went flying hear in Florida when it was about 60 degress or so and it was bone chilling cold.

Yeah, you've gotta be very hardcore to enjoy flying in the cold. I've flown in weather as cold as -20 Celsius and their's 3 main things you've gotta deal with:

1) The covering/airframe becomes more brittle. Just keep an eye on the covering and watch for cracks/tears

2) The battery capacity will dimish..keep a close eye on your batteries

3) You will have to reset your needles on your carb and the engine will be harder to start (some will start harder than others...my YS110 is nearly impossible to get going in the cold). Once the needles are set and the engine warms up, your good to go...and it'll make a very noticable increase in power, depending on how cold it is...

Winter in Florida is a Bi*ch!
When it gets below 70 deg F we have to start a little campfire to keep our hands warm

What's wrong with you guys??? Man up!!!!

Just kiddin', I have to fly, cold or not...

As a matter of fact I just got in from flying, 25 degrees and 10 mph winds, wasn't bad. You're right about the power, a noticable increase.

I used to fly off a frozen lake in the winter......the ice-fishers didn't like it when I buzzed their little huts though

here in Argentina, when we fly in winter we fly with less than 15 celcius. in fact the normal temperature in winter here is about 5 degrees celcius.
