nice work dude...keep learnin this stuff...it can pay off big in the future. designing in 3D really helps....when I was designing my sukhoi over the summer, I found a number of small problems once I assembled the parts in 3D....saved me a bunch o work!! I've tinkered with the newer 3D modeling tools out there (solidworks and inventor)....but many years of 2D AutoCAD use make it hard to break old habits. Here's an older version of the sukhoi fuse drawn up in autocad....then the real thing framed up in wood....what a feeling seeing the computer model on screen, then the real thing on the workbench! |

I used SDRC I-deas solid modelling all the time at work. It is like Pro-E, only more powerful. This could lead to some fights, but I use both and I-deas is just phenominal. Best part for me is that I use the finite element models to look at stress and stiffness of my parts in assemblies. Once we determine I have a good part we send it on to the guys who do nothing but stress analysis all day long and have then take a look. Good times and more importanly, it is not drafting. I cannot draft to save my butt. I only model and send it along to someone else to put all the fancy dimensions together. Here are a few pics of satellite components... don't ask what or where... just enjoy. We are also working on a micro air vehicle (MAV) that uses a DA (see attached pic...yes the cylinder heads are red like a 3W, but I assure you it is a DA). The pic is a public domain pic, so I can post it without getting hammered. It is carried by a soldier via backpack and flys where it needs to and comes home to papa when finished. It is a ducted fan of sorts (I call it a flying trash can). |

I forgot to add, great work John. It was your thread to start with.... and your work is looking good. Keep us posted as you progress. Believe it or not, I have never modelled an airplane.... |

I too am a 3D CAD designer. Been using Unigraphics for 20 years. Way better than Pro-E or I-deas (sorry VIPER69). Presently I am working for a company that manufactures valves for cryogenic industry. I have designs that have launched and flown on the Space Shuttle. Have also dabbled in my spare time with airplane designs. Its much easier when you tackle it in 3D, you see the mistakes before you try to fit them up. Keep up the good work Jon, you may find a career in it...
