Default New breed of airplanes,,thoughts?

So Mark Leseberg whipped out a set of side force generators on his Dalton 300 at the Masters. Obviously from the photos, it wasn't allowed to compete with them. So what are you thoughts about just turning guys loose and seeing what can be designed for the ultimate in flying machines?

So far, we've been dealing with the 10% scale deviation from a full scale aerobatic plane. What would happen if the guys were given free reign to come up with airplanes based on what would fly the best and completely disregard full scale?

Flying Mark's plane with the SFG's showed me quickly that such a little change makes a HUGE difference. Imagine what we could do with a clean slate and no outlines we had to emulate? There has been talk of this and I think it would be cool. To the new modeler there really isn't much difference between a Lazer and an Extra. This would be different,WAY DIFFERENT!

So what do you guys think? I think it's going to be really hard to come up with new maneuvers without new devices. The VP stuff is coming and that will be cool, but will it be allowed in competition? Not looking to start a war, just want to hear your thoughts.

Biff

I think if you want to fly aerobatics and dont want an aircraft that emulates anything, fly pattern

However if it is for fun or possibly dedicated 3/4D type comp, go for it.

I think if we are going to be competeing in IMAC, Masters events, the flier should be flying a model plane that replcates a full scale aerobatic plane. However, I dont see a big deal with adding these generators to the planes, have at it. I just dont want to see IMAC turn into flying 40% "pattern" style planes.

On that note, let it be up to the CD of the event to allow these add ons to be acceptable or not....just like the pilot and dash thing.

Okay Biff ol boy I'll bite, for me I like a plane to kinda look like a plane , and react like a plane, not the star wars sort of thing it would progress too.
Now I know since it's you that posted your feelings first, and you are the Biffmiester, that most will jump on your band wagon, okay, take your side. But I like what I like and make my own mind up! ......Lol

Whew!!........now I'll say I see nothing wrong with the SFG, but where would it end up? I have never tried them, (would like too) but as for now I think it should be only for Demo flights to wring it out and test the performance of the newest changes.
I think it was cool what mark did and I would like too see more,......but not in completion just yet....................There, now get your rope!!

Have matt throw some SFG's on the Cap and that would make them legal on the cap. I bet you would see alot of Caps next year.

I say don't allow them in standard IMAC events but allow them in the freestyle events. Since
freestyle doesn't emulate full scale..

Hello,

Personally I like the SGF's. It makes a nice difference on some items but not all. It will still come down to the skill on the pilot and using his equipment to its fullest. We see now a full scale Velox has them so this should open the door. Like full scale Greg Poe has a hammer tail that is not even close to a production 540. Sean tucker has special wings constructed.

So generally keep the plane looking like its suppose 300, 330s, 330L ,Velox,Yak etc is keeping with IMAC but I would like to see some allowences for a few bolt on items just like the full scale guys can do.

Imagine the look on the faces when Mark's demo showed how nice these simple items work for certain things. I have a laser let's get cutting them.

later

John

So......we could see an Un-Unlimited aerobatics class. Hmmmmm. This could give rise to new planes, new devices and new maneuvers.
Each device would enable some new, unheard of type of movement of the airplane, thus a new maneuver. How many different devices could you pack onto a plane?
This could also drive the radio manufacturers for new programming options.
I think this type of excitement is what keeps our hobby fresh and interesting without tossing all the old ideas out the window.
An Engineer's dream!!!

Did everyone miss this. Biff said that he flew with the SFGs on the plane. Can Biff even fly? Ive seen first hand what he can do with a foamy and its not good.

The SFG's were meant to start a new breed of patterns. I really want to see the Models break away from the full scale stuff. I have a lot of flying time in full scale aerobatics and it is finally time for them to come and get us. We have soo much to offer Aerobatics in general, that the only way we are going to make this better and more fun is to make these airplanes fly different. Once the full scale boys see how much fun we are having, they will change. Guaranteed! They know that we are capable of soo much more. Why not show them what we can all do. Here is the deal, in my opinion. I Loved the Rolling Loops at the Masters, but it was a pattern contest. The Freestyle Scores were supposed to count 10% of the final score, but the scores only ranged from 8.5 to 10. Realistically, the Freestyle only counted 1.5% of the Total Score.
That leaves 98.5% to the Known and Unknown. We have a lot of room for improvement here. The Planes can bee soo much better. The Patterns can be a great deal harder. Imagine 50% of the Known on Knife Edge. Imagine Super Small Rollers and snaps on Rolling Loops.
Thr technology is here and once people start to use these SFG's on Full Scale, everyone will want them. Including the model community. Lets start the trend and help to breed a new style of Aerobatics.
George Hicks signed my SFG's before the start of the Masters and it read

Mark,
SFG's are the future of Aerobatics
Go show them what they can do.

Looks like Biff's hat about to get cut up by a 3 blade prop. I don't want to be the one to break that news to Biff. I saw how he reacted after a He-Haw with the hat.
