How do you put meaning in your flying.

Ever look at some great pilots and think wow they look like every turn, twist, up, down has meaning. Not just like oh I'll try this or that. So when you guy's go to the air field do you try make it count or just goof off. I've been try more to make it look like a show, not just a circle.
