SPE 43

Posted 11-01-2009 at 06:58 PM by bigmike3412
I posted my question under another forum but I figured I should post it under my own blog. So here it is:
I bought my spe 43 new last year and had it started once after 30 minutes of flipping. AFter the first start, I shut it down to see if it will start up again. Well, it didn't and i just gave up and bought a DA50. But now I need this engine (DA 50 is way too big for this 72" plane) and would like to figure it out. I have a feeling its the ignition because the one time I had it started, I was able to tweak the carb and it ran good for 5 minutes or so. Anyrate, I am getting a weak spark on the plug (compared to my DA 50) so I'm assuming thats not helping. Any recommendations? I'm willing to buy a new module if anyone can give me info on where to buy. Also, who could i send the motor off to for troubleshooting if the ignition module don't fix the problem? THanks in advance for any help!
Mike

Is yours the older style with the exposed crank tail, or the new enclosed rear crankcase ? The older ones have some now known issues, the newer Cermark version is supposed to be updated and fixed, but I have not seen one. Many of the Melody ignition modules were DOA or died slowly causing frustration like mine did. Unless yours is the newer version and the ignition really is improved, C&H Ignitions is your friend, They will sell you a bolt on RCXcel ingition unit that will smooth the engine out considerably and allow a much lower idle. You might check the timing before spending money, they have been known to be way off.

If yours is one of the older ones, Cermark says they will update it for $30, something to think about maybe...

I would say that my experience is that my 71" Yak 54 was a nose heavy warbird with the 43 up front, but if you had a 50 in there....

Good luck !
