dream car, one dream away from reality.

so apparently later this year the aptera will be released in california. if you don't don't know the aptera is a new car (sorta) that will be releases as two different models, the type 1e and the type 1he (i think). the 1e is electric that runs on lipo's and gets about 120 miles to a charge, and the 1he is a gas-electric hybrid that gets on average 300 mpg. they accomplish this through aerodynamics. studies have shown that the average car uses 70% of it's energy just moving air out of the way. well the aptera, looking more like an airplane, solves that problem through streamling and a few other neat tricks such as only having three wheels. due to it's weight and the three wheel configuration it's classified as a motorcycle, but because it has three wheels and it's totally enclosed you aren't required to get a motorcycle license or wear a helmet. and it has indy car style safety features, but as of right now it will only do about 85-90mph instead of 200. check it out at www.aptera.com. and it's a lot cheaper then the tesla roadster, although not as fast.

the electric version is set to be priced around $26,000 and the hybrid is around $28,000 or $29,000. not bad for what you get. but be warned, it's a very unique car in it's styling in order to be as aerodynamic as possible. it looks more like a wingless airplane, hence the name aptera(wingless flight).

i think it's more of a parkflyer car. you can fit two 7 foot surfboards in the trunk, but they're relatively flat. if you're into flying wings then you're totally hooked up! the other issue is that they say the aptera is not designed to pull a trailer because that defeats the purpose of the design being so aerodynamic. get a ford escape hybrid that 30-34 mpg. not bad for an SUV. their is also some dude in the midwest, i can't recall his name offhand, but he is getting 60+mpg out of hummers and other large SUV's by removing the gas engine and installing a diesel and then adding an extra tank full of hydrogen to be injected into the cylinders along with the fuel. it cuts fuel consumption in half while boosting the horsepower to 600bhp. that is totally badass as well. he complains that he suffers from being environmentally conscious as well as in love with big trucks. here in south carolina there is a place that is getting ready to start retrofitting cars with a tank that mixes water with, i think baking soda, i could be wrong. the idea is similar to the hydrogen except it changes water from h2o into h2o. doesn't make sense? well in normal water the the molecules are arranged h-o-h well this one will be h-h-o which burns like a mother****er. the effect is the same though. it displaces the amount of fuel being injected in the cylinders and still burns, thereby decreasing the amount of fuel consumed effectively doubling mpg. they are planning on starting in the next few months and will be offering a warranty on the product as well.
