Hi folks,
I am a long-time scale/scratch builder involved in heli's and large scale planes. I bought an Evolution 160 cc radial to put a plane behind, preferably a Waco. My flying style is fun, not extreme aerobatics, low flying and realism mean more than much of anything else. I have body issues that make me have to fly pretty low, so I need power to get out of trouble.

The motor is rated at 10.5 hp.

I just don't know how to size the plane to the motor. I am going to have to either convert and redraw or draw my own plans to get the proper size I need.

If I size the plan size of the motor to the actual motor size, I come up with a 98" top wing span, something just over 27%. I am concerned that this may be too small for the motor and way over powered which makes landings suck.

So Experts, please advise.
Thanks

I have a 12 year old 71" Wingspan, Ziroli P-47 War Bird with a Gas Zenoah 3.8 Engine. I have been flying it with a Futaba 72 System on Channel 22, Futaba FP-R129DP Dual Conversion PCM Receiver. It has worked great for years and maybe the KISS System should apply.

I am thinking about converting it to 2.4 so I will be using the same Transmitter for all my aircraft. The P-47 is the last plane that I have on 72.

I have three Futaba Receivers that I can use. I do not need the high speed function with digital servos for this aircraft. I just want a reliable system. All three receivers have been well tested in other aircraft that I fly.

Futaba R617FS, Futaba R6008HS or Futaba 6014HS

Any comments from Futaba Pilots would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ed

Anyone know of a cool pilot for this plane? I like to paint pilots so thats not an issue... I like the aces of iron guys but not sure if the size will work.... maybe just a helmet? don't want a super expensive pilot... under $50 would be good

any suggestions would be great! thanks much!!

I have read and re-read the instructions for the Hitec X4. I am still confused about how to best charge NiMh batteries.

In the instructions, it says there is an "auto" and "manual" mode. I cannot find how to get to auto. I only have manual charge. How do I get auto and do I want it?

How do I best charge and maintain a battery that is 4 cell, 3200 mah? It seems that I never run it down very low (ignition battery). Can someone walk me through the steps to cycle this battery using the X4?

When I purchase a new NiMh, the guy at the store told me to make sure I "don't use my X4 for the first time. Use a regular receiver battery charger". Why? Is that correct?

What is the best way to get the most life from a new NiMh?

I am glad to have discovered this site and Thank's for allowing me to join your circle. I have been involved with R/C Modeling for approx 40 years. And believe it or not' this is my first real forum. I not only do planes but am also in up to my neck with the Monster trucks, Sand Buggies, Street cars, Boats as well as helicopters. The majority of my collection is of the grander scale. U Know like, bigger, faster, bigger. Did I mention faster. I will be glad to post pics on another occasion. The item that landed me on your site is my newest addition: A SABACH 342 107". Yes the 36% red, white and black version. I love this aircraft. And cannot wait til I have her in the air. I have to work early tomorrow, so I am going to cut this intro short. I would like to close by saying Thank You again for having me and Please be on the lookout for A DLE 111 that right, I have not got a motor for my SABACH 342. So if any one has a smoking deal they can point me to. Whether it be new or used I am willing to look hi and low to source out a good deal. I can even offer up my services or trade any and all of my collection of smaller stuff for all or part of a DLE 111.
Sincerely, theottonator

at our club when we have our contests like pattern lets say, the CD wants all people that are flying to engage there fail safe. I may be old school but I am not sure why, except most of the planes are electric some glow, please be honest and tell me what you think. I personally find it not to work at the right time, there saying mostly on the ground, but of course on the ground its in the air also, depending on how you set it up, low throttle and neutral on the controls, input would be great FOR OR AGAINST PLEASE.

Discussion DLE-60 twin with angled plug mod

Well here is my mod to try an angled plug on a DLE-60 twin. I guess if it doesn't work out the replacement heads is not overly expensive. I don't know if anyone has tried this and I have searched and found no info. If you guys have any info please feel free to chime in.

I milled the head at around 45 degree to to clear the fins for a spark plg, milled enough to get spark plug to sit flat on the surface, and from there drilled a hole for 1/4-32 tap.

Also made a 10x1 mm threaded plug out of aluminum and cut it to length so it will sit inside without altering the combustion chamber size. Next I welded it shut with a Tig welder, I am no expert at Tig but have enough practice just to be able to try. During the weld, I kept it from overheating and made welding time as short as possible.

I had to use a 1/4-32 plug because there is not enough aluminum thickness for a 10mm CM-6 plug, I could have probably built up more aluminum using the Tig welder but will leave that for another day. I just drilled and tapped for 1/4-32 since they are smaller plugs will also reduce the width of the engine even more. I hope this weekend I can run up the motor and see if it even starts.

I am not at all concern about rpm loss with this mod, I am well over powered, I just want to prevent seeing the spark plug caps when all said and done.

Hello everyone,

Signed up because of the many good posts I have seen in my Google searches. I am a retread flyer, currently living in Florida, who last flew using a crystal-based transmitter. I stopped flying because I could never get the "hang" of the transmitter's gimbal configurations. None of them fit me so I would crash planes for no good reason other than "my thumbs got mixed up".

My RC flying idiosyncrasy is that I am predominately left-handed. This presents a problem because my gaming (and other life) experiences have shown me that I tend to "mash" anything under my right thumb during panic situations (as in FPS shooters and action games found on PS3, WII, and XBox consoles); thus, I believe my using a Mode II transmitter configuration would be extremely difficult. Mode I transmitter configurations don't seem to be much better because I would have to use both thumbs to control the elevators and ailerons; hence, the function under the right-thumb gimbal would suffer.

My current thinking is that using a Mode III transmitter configuration could be an optimum solution to avoiding unnecessary crashes because Mode III is the mirror image of a Mode II configuration which would put the elevator and aileron controls under my left thumb (where they belong for left-handed people). The next best alternative would be a Mode I transmitter that had the capability to "swap" the rudder and aileron control functions as this would give me the Mode III configuration that I think would give me the best flying experience.

My request is for information about good RC transmitters that have Mode III configurations and for websites that offer RC equipment and flying assistance to left-handed flyers. I should like to find a really good RC flight simulator too ... but one that would fly properly with a left-handed transmitter.

My ultimate goal, for when I am not out flying my plane, is to be able fly the Aces High flight simulator with my RC transmitter. This would require some kind of adapter to convert my transmitter signals to USB input signals used by CH or Saitek flight stick products.

Thanks for reading this ...

Currently me and my friend Roberto are in the way to build a Grumman G-22 (as Smithsonian Museum hold on) on 1:3 scale. We want to install a DLE 170 engine, but we don´t have data consumption. The plane will be a biplane about 120" wingspan with 30 kg of weitht (67 lb). Anyone has experience enough to advise me about the tank volume in order to fly 15-20 minutes?

Discussion My Evolution 58GX gas engine CH Ignition Conversion

A while back I came into possession of a Evolution 58GX gas engine. This was one of the earlier versions with two magnets on the drive hub and a old style Valach CDI unit too. First the Valach CDI unit had the power input pulled off. I am planning on using the engine in a giant size Great Planes Aeromaster Biplane that I got too. It just fits inside my car so it'll be the biggest plane I will be flying later. I am somewhat limited as to how big of a airplane I can fly by whether I can fit it into my car or not. I do have a Subaru Outback and the rear seats fold down flat so it does have a fair amount of room in the back of course. But even then it is still limiting as to how big something can be to fit in inside.

I first decided to see if I could fix the Valach Ignition module or not. That actually did turn out well and I successfully repaired the Valch ignition unit and test ran the engine using it. But then I found out that these earlier Valach units weren't all that reliable and that many people had problems with them. Plus you had to use a special spark plug with the top cut off along with the special spark plug cap and a thin wall deep socket if you ever wanted to change spark plugs.

So I decided to convert the engine over to use the CH-Ignitions module instead. The conversion turned out really well too. It has a nice metal timing sensor holder and since the hall effect sensor only detects one of the magnets (one magnet is north pole oriented and the other magtnet is south pole oriented) it was not a problem to get it setup.

I used regular pump gasoline from my local gas station. I mixed it with Stihl Ultra oil. I was running a Top Flite 24x10 propeller on the engine. I was getting around 5750 RPMs with that combination. The muffler is not very good as I measured 102DB using a iPhone DB meter app. According to Pe Reiver's Prop power calculator spreadsheet application the engine was developing around 6.5 hp.

The Engine from when I first got it:

After an awesome week of weather, the clouds descended on Triple Tree on Saturday and pretty much said "ENOUGH GUYS!" and it rained. I pulled into the grounds to pack up our tent and to say goodbye to friends only to get stuck in a convoy of RV's, trucks, trailers and cars all going in the opposite direction. So to everyone I had seen during the week, I hope your travel home was safe!

After my long drive home yesterday I came to two very decisive conclusions:
1) Nothing feels as good, after a solid week of being away, as sleeping in your own bed! holy mackerel that was nice!

2) No matter if the milage and time frame are the same, the trip home is MUCH, MUCH longer. I am convinced that the whole time/space continuum does indeed stretch and make every minute of the return trip double if not triple. Just saying...

On to the 31st edition of the Joe Nall week. Man... where does one start? The weather was awesome. The attendance was insane. The quality of the airplanes on the grounds was incredible. The amount of FG members in every nook and cranny of Triple tree was off the charts! Basically to make a very long list short, it was NALL, and it was Awesome. I say this every year, but I'll say it again, if you have not been, Please get there. A huge shout out to Mr. Pat and the entire staff of Triple Tree. What an outstanding job they have done with that facility. Every year when we return something has improved, it's simply always better. And to think that a week before there was flooding, one would never have known.. great job fellas, we truly appreciate everything that you guys do!

This year there were so many great things going on all week that I simply can't recap them all here, so I'm going to re-cap them in my Nall re-cap video I am working on. I am going to disappear for a few days and lock myself in front of my computer and put together a video that will hopefully catch a glimpse of the spirit that is Joe Nall.

Here's a little teaser of what is to come...
Also, there are tons of pictures and videos and reports and stories and all kinds of stuff located on the OFFICIAL Flyinggiants Joe Nall Threads located HERE!

And once again, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Herve from Performance Aircraft Unlimited for sponsoring FG's coverage of the 2013 Joe Nall Week. We simply could not cover the event properly without the help of a sponsor and Herve is a pleasure to work with. I hope many of you had the chance to see One of the PAU team pilots fly the new Edge's that PAU is releasing in the next few weeks or maybe even had a chance to grab the sticks! So again Thank you to Herve for his support, it is really appreciated!

Also, Thanks again to PAU, 3D Farm and RCairplanestands.com for hooking up the 2013 Joe Nall Week FG/PAU Give-a-way. Mr. E is one lucky guy! And he promised we would get a pic of his new PAU airplane with the EME 60cc motor from the Farm installed sitting on his INSANELY good RCairplanestand.com stand. So watch for that as well!

It was a pleasure hanging out with so many of you I really wish we could all do this every weekend!

Just remember there are only 361 days left until the gates open for the 32nd edition o the Joe Nall Week!!

I found some on the e10 GX ev1 said it's a GREAT engine.

I have an old Great planes 60 Stick that I want to put it on.

I know, they says this engine is compatabel to the 90, But I like to go a little larger on the power scale, and if it ripes the wings off, it would be a GREAT excuse to get something else .....

thx
