Help! Recovering oil contaminated wood

Hi,

I'm recovering an all wood 30%. Some areas were contaminated w/ smoke oil and gas.

How do you:
-remove the oil/gas from the wood?
-seal off the wood in those areas so that the new covering sticks perfectly?

Also, the old covering came right off with the heat gun but left a small amount of adhesive on the wood. Do you recover on top of that or does it have to be removed and how?

thanks,

Eric

Use Acetone for both. It will help dry the oil in the wood and get the glue off. After the acetone use Balsarite to coat the oily areas.

Use crc brake clean. It works good but just remember that if you get it on a gue joint you need to reglue it.

A heat gun and absorbant tissues help to get some oil out, then the same method as Rolling Harrier uses.

Any body ever try K-2R spot lifter? Works good removing Glow oil. I don't know if they even make it any more.

Yes, K2R is awesome, spray on , let it soak up and brush away. They do still make them, last time I saw it at an ACE/True Value hardware store.

Thanks,

Any alternative to balsarite? (no model shop around! can't get it before 2 months!) Anything available in a hardware store?

Eric

Hey Eric,
CA (Cyanoacrylate sp) will also displace oil and let you recover. Use thin.

I wonder if monocoat trim adhesive would work?
