I am covering my 40% Carden Edge and having the normal problems with monogoat. The balsa on the fuse sides is tough and durable balsa. Monogoat does not stick to this grainy balsa well. Sticks good to contest grade. The red seems to be a real bieotch. Anyway I ripped It off twice. Then had to clean off some residue of the goat with trim solvent. When installing the next attempt I discovered the monogoat sticks well to this balsa where the solvent was applied. So I wiped the whole side down with trim solvent ( goat glue is the new name ). It sticks like a magnet even before the heat is applied. Pulled all the wingles out and it looked good without heat. Hit it with the heat gun and it pulled up nice and tight. After 4 hours it is still nice. Something new for the bag of tricks. FWB

Yep, Trim Solvent is a multi-purpose wonder tool for all things covering. The smell/fumes are absolutely horrific, though. That stuff will stank up your work area for a loooong time if the proper measures aren't taken (speaking from headache-ridden experience).

FWB, Wonder if DSP, Huffmier or some of these other Top Gun Builders use simular methods? I've heard of Hair spray, filler, ect. getting great results. |

I've tried everything with not to good results. Just kind of stumbled across wipping the wood down with Goat Glue. It sticks the covering pretty quick so be ready and postion properly. FWB

Great find! Whats in this stuff anyway? An MSDS sheet might shed some light on it. Last edited by gareth.ky; 09-22-2007 at 04:35 PM. |

Hey all , Try Balsa loc .It is made in the UK by Solarfilm . I believe Horizon/H9 bring Solarfilm products into the States .It does not stink or make you go high . You brush it on and when it dries clear you apply the covering . Works great on birch ply and as well as all grains of balsa and glass fibre wing joining tapes . Have fun and if any of you are going to the Shootout in Tucson I`ll see you there ! Dave Lucas |

The one thing that always scares me about using trim solvent is that it will bond almost permanent, especially film to film (or goat to goat in this case) No room for mistakes. But, on the bright side, you know its not going to come off and the worst possible moment.

Hey guys I'd like to chime in year. The reason the trim solvet worked was there was contamination on the wood. Either a wax, skin oil from your hands, or even moisture. Wood butcher are you working in doors in air conditioning? remember different grades of balsa retain moisture differently . Moisture is your worst enemy when working with most coverings especially monokote. Nothing has the gloss of monokote and when applied well it makes your plane look like plastic. thats why i still like to use it. I feel you need to cover indoors under AC to bring the moisture in the wood way down. I like to bring the pieces indoors at least for a week before i start covering. Great idea to use the trim solvent to prepare the surface but be careful thats some strong stuff ,melts foam in a flash . acetone is good and also lacquer thinner but again be carefull around foam. I'll see you around at the next contest... Tony Fandino |
