Default Tower Pro MG995 Servo's

Hi dudes just a quickie, are these servos any good for a 73" span cermark edge 540, spe 40cc intened for general flying and more likely then not some kamikazaa style 3d flying?

We all know that cheap 'normally' means absolute cack, but considering the spec for a servo that costs about 8.00GBP each they seem tantalisingly hard to resist in value for money terms.

What dya reckon chaps, shall I give em a try?

We've been using the SCR 9.7Kg/cm metal-gared servos from HobbyCity with great success.

The output arm is a *little* sloppier than I'd like (but some of Futaba's servos are worse) and for some reason they come with a rather short lead but apart from that they work just fine.

We've got guys here using them in 50cc Extras and 1/4 scale cubs with no worries.

At under US$18 they're a good value buy, so good in fact that I see HC has them on backorder right now :-(

But forget the TowerPro 995MG -- that's just throwing your money (and probably your plane) down the toilet.

The new 996R (which supercedes the 995) is a little better in terms of its performance but it's the heaviest standards-size servo I've ever encountered and it's still using the same poor-quality feedback pots and gearset as the 995 so I'd still say "avoid".

If only they could get the pots to last & get rid of the overshoot problem - it would be a good servo. I bought 5 of them for a "cheap" gasser project and had one go bad after not that many flights (40-50 or so.) Luckily the servo died while on the ground. One elevator half would stay up till a certain stick position and & then pop to where it was supposed to be. That would have made for a real difficult flight!

Well the 996R *almost* gets rid of the overshoot -- but as I said, it's basically the same mechanics with a slightly better amp board in it so the reliability factor will not be improved.

And, despite the fact they have a *very* heavy gearset (brass/steel) the gears on these things wear pretty damned quick too. I had one develop *serious* slop on the rudder of a 40-sized profile in less than 10 hours flying - yet the HS5925 on elevator is still tight as a duck's ...., despite its lighter aluminum gearset.

cheers chaps,

X-JET -I'm in the UK (sort of) and cant find anyone that stocks the tower hobbies servos you mention, had a look on e-sharks but nothing there either.

I'm fairly new to this rc aero malarky so still trying to find my feet with everything thats on offer. I'm using Futaba 9255 in a t-rex 600 heli at the moment and they work a treat for my needs so I might look into getting some for the plane, but at 50GBP a pop they arnt cheap but from the limited time I have used them they do seem to do the job nicely.

I dont mind spending a bit extra for decent gear, i just dont want to buy something for such and such a price when I can buy others that will do the job just as well for less. I got some Spectrum servos that came with my DX7 radio but i dont think these are really up to the job.

The spec of these is as follows:

Type- Digital Hi-TorqueTorque:
72 oz/in @ 4.8v,
88 oz/in @6vSpeed:.19 sec/60 deg @ 4.8v, .15 sec/60 deg @ 6v
Dimensions (WxLxH):0.74"x1.50"x1.47"
Weight:1.5 oz
Bearing:Single Ball Bearing
Motor Type:3-pole ferriteGears:Composite

I wouldn't bother with any servo that didn't have metal gears. a 40cc engine *will* shake and if you've got 3D-sized surfaces/throws then the extra strength of a metal gearset will *really* be good insurance against a sudden loss of control due to stripped cogs.

88oz/in is also a bit weak for a gas-powered model.

There are a lot of new servos coming on the market now (mainly out of China) and I've done a pretty comprehensive round-up of the (current) options that I'm trying to get up on the web next week. Stay tuned.

I have the scanner rc servos in my 87" lanier edge 540 and they work great so far, haven't flown the plane yet because fo the weather. I had the nylon gear sets in the ailerons bun I'm kinda scared to fly it like that so I bought the metal gear sets from Abell hobby online for 4.00 bucks. They have mostly the line of scanner servos there but they cost a couple more dollars than the hobby city ones. there 22.00 bucks. If you cant wait for stock at Hobby city go there. shipping is cheaper and a little quicker.
