Tips wanted for makeing custom cable flying wires please

Hi all,

I am in need of a little help here. I am looking to make some cable flying wires for my Pitts and I cant find any company that has cable long enough and if I find the cable then my next problem is how to attach it to the fuse. and wings. Im useing 4-40 rods for the tail flying wires, i just want to use cable flying wires on the wing as I feel that it would be more secure and strong.
If any of you have pictures on how you make them that would be great as well as companys where you get supplies for makeing these!

Nelson Hobby Specialties has Stainless "flying wires" that are .125 wide and .030 thick, no ends. They suggest soldering 2/56 screws to the ends togo into turn buckles.
I slotted 4/40 allen head screws with a 1/32 Woodruff key cutter to slot the heads and then silver soldered the "flying wires in. These are a little small for scale for a 50% model but work for a 27% model.

There is some body in Europe that can make flying wires for models, these have both left and right hand threaded ends to ease proper rigging.

Thanks Thunderbird!! I checked out the pic's and info on nelsons website and it looks perfect!!!
I just dont see how a solder joint would be strong enough for this application thou. Are these just for looks or also for strength as well?

Mainly for looks altho I have put a pull of 200# on a test sample and did not break it. Retired now ,do not have acess to an Instron any more to get pull to failure data.

Thanks Thunderbird, Im going to try it but I need my flying wires to be structural as well.... If any one else has any ideas or pictures of their flying wires please feel free to post them! I really love different ideas!

Thanks for that link Thunderbird, I e-mailed Hans from that site and with a quick reply said for all 8 of the flying wires I would need at approx. 40 inches long, it would cost $28.50CHF/ wire or $222.00CHF (about $218USD) for all 8, shipping not included in that price. He said cheap shipping would be about $40-$50.... seems a bit high!! What do you think???

for all wires including pull/pull system wire I go to the lockal fishing store and buystainles sea trace wire available in may different breaking strains then I cut the head off the appropriate size bolt flatten the end drill a hole pass the wire throuch brass tubing through the hole and back through the tubing.
next crush the tube to secure the wire then for extra security fill the tube with solder.

I have never had one fail yet but make sure to smooth the edges ot he hole through the bolt.

Hey John have you checked out maybe the pull pull systems froms Don's hobby Shop. They have nice kevlar systems that I thinkg would work out great and are plenty strong for flying wires.

I just went through this ordeal myself. the previous owner of my 29% christen made some very ugly flying wires that were functional as long as they stayed on. I changed them out using sullivan cc32 couplers 2-56 ($3.69) for 8 of them. I bought some 60lb test .032 dia black nylon coated stainless fishing leader from the local gander mountain. 50 ft ($1.98) enough to do several planes this size. and some sullivan gold-n-clevis's about $6 for 12. had to buy some Oatey soldering flux. came in a white bottle about 6 oz I think. cost about 10 bucks. got it from the local menards home improvement center. says it will flux any metal except aluminum. stripped off about 1/2 of nylon from the leader wire. dipped it into the flux which just happens to have a small hole in the top to accept the wire without dumping it into another container. let sit for about 30 seconds in the flux put a drop of the flux inside of the coupler. tinned the leader wire using normal rosin core solder and a normal soldering iron. not a gun type either. it tinned immediately and very well. slid it inside the coupler and then applied the soldering iron the the outside of the coupler and wicked in some solder and presto it was now firmly soldered together. low buck. my wires now look great and stay on.

Hi..go to the Airwild site. They have a 4/40 bolt that has a hole in it. You pass your wire through the hole then either tie a knot in it or add a drop of solder to secure the wire. Then you can use them as flying wires and they are adjustable as well.
These bolts are designed for rudder cables on giant scale but could be used for flying wires as well. All you need is the right size wire. Also Balsa SA has very flexiabl rigging cable in two sizes as well as the swage fittings to secure it. I use this wire on both my 33% Waco and my Balsa USA Stearman. Balsa USA will sells the wire by the foot so you can order what you need. Generally 35 feet will wire a very large bi-plane with some left over.
