Just enjoy the plane you have...

He said it flew like crap, if it didnt ,he would enjoy it.
Lonnie I'm not sure of your investment potential here, Like bob said it will cost you quite a bit of money and ALOT of time, you will have to completely strip it down to nothing and start cutting and sanding,so if you really like/want THIS very airplane , then go for it all the way.
Look it over real good to see if the previous owner added lead to it for CG, then like I told you at the field, go through all of the servo linkage setup, and make sure the servos are centered, maybe use smaller/lighter batteries. I bet we can make that thing fly "OK" with out all of the work, if you want to try it.

When somebody would complain about their old car, we used to suggest that they jack up the radiator cap and drive a new car underneath.

I'm kind of thinking that you could replace that airplane with a more contemporary model that flies better for less money and certainly a lot less work thah trying to rehabilitate it.

And the G62 does not need to be a problem, it's a good engine, you just need a plane with less weight and more wing area. You are probably under 1200 square inches, get something up around 1450 that will weigh 17-18 pounds and you'll be much happier.

For that $600.00 previously mentioned and just a little more you could obtain a new 28% plane that's lighter, has more wing area, has larger control surfaces, use all the stuff you already have, convert the G-62 from mag to ignition, and have a much better and lighter plane.

The one you have fits a fun fly category by current standards.

If you really enjoy messing around with this kind of thing then do it, but if not; then get youself a current day airplane because you will most likely never finish it if you do not have a real love for building or modifying these things. Like I stated; It will be allot of work.

drop in a dl 50 and see what that does for improvement. Kris W is right about peeling her down and sanding and such but i would try to swap to a lighter engine 1st to see what kind of difference that makes.

Take it to the field, gas it up and light a fuse on the fuel tank, take off and when the fuse ignites the gas tank it will be one of the most awesome sights you ever saw!!! Please get video. LOL Just kidding, yea I would keep the engine, and all the electronics and get yourself another 50cc modern airframe, Tom at Wildhare has some great planes that you could use that engine in. I hope I did'nt offend you.

Try to find a used Wild hare extra they are way lighter and built to use a G62 as one of the engine options. They are not quite the plane some of the newer 30% airframes but they fly fair and are readily available used.

I'm hoping for some advise to lightin the plane, presently it's very undisirable to fly. I've included some pics. The side of the plane is styrofoam over 3/16 ply. I've though of cutting lighting holes in the 3/16 ply that runs from the engine mount to the back of the canopy. Everything in back ot the canopy is sticks, no solid wood. Everyone feel welcome to chime in.

Lonnie
Well, you have allot of replies; have you made a decision? If you are planning to go forward with lighteng it; you could swing by with your airplane and I would be happy to show you what to do. You can just go with a stage 1 diet, or we can take you the edge with stage 3.

The G-62 is not your problem. The plane is a sled. Bet the use could have 3 lbs cut out of it with no real thought as to what can go.

Changing the engine out for a lighter one will not do you one once of good I'll bet. You would have to make up the differance with ballast anyway.

Fly it fast or start cuttin' it up. I understand that doing what most seem to suggest here (get another plane ?) is just not cost effective. You could just build a bigger set of wings to handle the load. Again, not effective.

I think the best course of action would be strip the fuse and cut all you can from the fuse. This is just time not so much money. Keep the engine, now matter how old it is your great grandkid can still use it.

Take it over to Bobs and get the die grinder after it. Or strip it out and pitch/sell it and get a SD 30% Yak. They fly ok on a G62. A bit of minor grinding on the yak and some proper battery selection will get you around 17lb with a lot more wing area..
