AMA rules state that any model airplane weighing over 55 Lbs. needs to pass a safety inspection by a certified AMA inspector. Assuming both planes, Craig's (CBK07) and mine were over 55 Lbs we decided to get them inspected. Bob Trueworthy was supposed to have his inspected also but he had more important matters to attend to. I believe he was on a honeymoon or something similar, yes I don't blame him for not showing up, I would do the same, way to go Bob. Craig contacted Ron Liska who is a certified inspector and he agreed to do the inspection at a club I belong to, Woodstock airport in CT. We met at the field where the inspection was to take place, Ron was as thorough as can be, he checked and inspected and examined every bolt, nut, wire, connection, glue joint, linkages, servos, connections, and everything else you could think off. Checking one plane at a time, he was efficient, being a giant scale modeler himself. It was good to deal with someone who knows what's going on. We assembled the airplanes in his presence, filled them with fuel and put them on a regular scale, it wasn't easy determining the exact weight due to the enormous size of the planes. Craig's was 63 wet and mine was 70 loaded with fuel and smoke, if you wonder about the weight difference, I have a smoke system with 40 Oz tank. I also have a separate battery powering my Seiko servo, and an on board tach. With a temporary authorization to fly, valid only on the day of issue, test flights were allowed. Two qualifying flights must be performed in the inspectors presence. A typical range check was performed, without the engine running and with the motor running, both planes passed, and of course fail safe was programmed to bring engine to idle in case of interference and lockout. Now it was time to check it's airworthiness, start engine, clear it, signal given for takeoff. Ron called the maneuvers, basic stuff, rolls, loops, inverted flying, spins to unrestricted aerobatics, as it is called, I felt I was flying IMAC. I kinda liked the idea of flying straight lines for a change, half of my brain was telling me to listen to Ron and the other half was telling me to do what I love to do most and that's hucking. I did well overall, except for few times when the evil side of my brain won and I lost it. That actually helped me break in the motor otherwise I would be hucking. Back to the inspection, the same was repeated for both planes, they passed with flying colors. This was mine and Craig's first AMA certified experimental radio control aircraft inspection, I hope it will not be the last. This certification is good for one year, enabling us to fly these planes just like any other airplane, definitely an experience. There are some Flying Giants members in the process of building much larger model airplanes. What's next, maybe a full scale remote control? I don't think so as AMA limits the weight at a Maximum of 100 Lbs with fuel and smoke ready to fly. For more info on the subject here is a link to the AMA radio control aircraft program requirements and inspector information. http://www.modelaircraft.org/PDF-files/520-A.pdf

| http://www.modelaircraft.org/PDF-files/520-A.pdf Under this link, page 17 line 8 "Flight velocity shall not exceed 80k or 92mph" WHAT?! typo? (yeah I read the whole thing) I think it is really good that the AMA does all of that. Extremely professional and it wouldbe a HUGE resource to fight any naysayers to the hobby. It shows that this stuff is taken very seriously.
