Friday XFC Report! Continuing The FG coverage from Muncie at the 2007 XFC, Friday was the official beginning of the contest. The morning started out with the "known" sequences, in which pilots were required to perform two pre-determined maneuvers at any time during their sequence. This methodology was true for both the heli's and planks. With over 40 pilots in between both sides of the camp, the rounds contained 5 heli flights, then 5 plane flights until everyone was around. 3D flying at its best folks! The knowns were killer, and pilots demonstrated their precision abilities along with pure throwdown stick bangin' fun! The music was killer, and all genres were present - Herbie Hancock to Limp Bizkit, whatever you're into, it was being flown! After the first round was complete, it was time for the all out "unknown", or pure freestyle flying. A note to those of you who are as confused as I was when I first tried to figure out the known/unknown thing - known refers to the fact that the judges know before hand what is being flown. Conversely, unknown means they have no idea what's coming. Ok, now that we have that covered, what transpired next was simply off the hizzy. Man, the guys this year held nothing back! We'll let the photos and videos tell the story about the flying, be sure to check 'em out! At the end of the day, the scores were posted, and a late night practice round ensued. Hilights from the day: Matt Chapman and Mike Mancuso's noontime airshow - these guys are nuts!! Check out the photos guys! The boys flew for about 25 minutes, sometimes within feet of one another and gave the crowd of hundreds an unbelievable show! Justin Chi Heli demo - We all know Justin as the 4 year old heli prodigy kid who makes all us old coots hate life. I've seen Justin fly a bunch of times over the past year, and he just keeps getting better every time! While the elders experience brown spots and pucker, Justin makes it all look easy while he's probably got Barney on the mind! Back to the sim for me BTW, pops Benny is a very cool cat to know as well. Summer Sizzle Fair! - Along side the XFC at the HUUUUUGE AMA Headquarters was a killer fair! The two combined events created a very cool vibe of excitement and fun at the facility. Music flowed through the grounds towards the end of the event, so we packed up and ran over to check it out. Coming from Cali, it was very cool to see a hometown gathering like this. Live music, tea cups, and Sponge Bob... Sweet! Balloons - In the morning, and at dusk, the local full scale balloon hucking crew put on a killer show. 19 in total filled the skyline and what a sight! Tomorrow I'm going to try to weasel my way onto one, but it's lookin' pretty slim at this point. 6:30am takeoff time..... hmmm. ![]() Wrapping up the day, our buddy Mark Trent pulled out the Bud Light beverages, and the judges, pilots, and contestants had some time to decompress and enjoy each other's company. The who's who of the hobby were there, and everyone was yukkin' it up. And finally, my new bud Mike McConville - I like Mike's style! During his freestyle, Mike decided to take apart 2 120 minute VCR tapes and tie the ends to the wingtips of his new Hangar9 260. Lollercoaster! He and DannO had NO idea how many feet of tape the spools contained! From what we saw, I'm guessing a 1/4 mile. This was one of those things you had to be around to see. Mike, had a blast hanging with you dude!! The sun went down on the first day of The XFC. Everyone here is having a blast, the competition is fierce with ZERO attitude on either side of the fence. Enjoy the photo and video flood, and remember where you saw it first! We're bustin chops here to bring you the best of this killer event! More tomorrow! PHOTO FLOOD BELOW!
