Default New Smart-Fly Release

I let the news out of the bag a few weeks ago about the new Smart-Fly Power Expander Sports Plus and here it is. By far one of the neatest and best designed power systems for the sports sized gas airplane community to be released in recent times.

These are not on the Smart-Fly web site yet. They are fresh off the production line and SF has not had time to load the site with all the specs and photos etc.. So boys we have first shot at getting these things. If you're flying or building a 50cc to 85cc gasser then this power system is custom designed for you. Lets take a quick tour of what it has on board and the benefits..

First of all, there is the proven Fiber Optic kill switch built in to the board. Yes sir, no more additional items to have a secure engine kill system mounted in your plane. It comes as part of the package.

Secondly, it has a built in super regulator factory set to 6.00 volts. So now you can plug your Li-Ions or Li-Po packs directly into the power expander. No need to go and buy that regulator. The regulator is part and partial of the power system as well.

It has a secondary regulator built into the Power Expander that regulates the voltage to the receiver to 5 volts. Your receiver never sees the voltage or fluctuations going to the servos. The two power systems are separate.

All the servo signals are filtered so you don’t get stray glitching from long servo leads. The signal from the Rx is filtered and then amplified so your servo gets a solid signal. You move the stick and the servo goes to where it was intended. No bouncing or buzzing servos.

You turn it on or off with a single failsafe switch also on the board. So two batteries, one switch to turn them both on and off. The pin switch is also available from Smart-Fly so you get a neat single hole switch installation. No more butt ugly big black switches and plugs botching up the side of your fuselage.

Two battery charge points are on the power expander board. Plug your charger into the Power Expander and your charging the packs. If your using balanced Li-Po’s then the pig tail lead is on the pack anyway.

Why is it aimed at the 50cc to 85cc market?

Well, it's ideally designed for a medium duty power setup. Smart-Fly considered the options when designing this device and figured an airplane up to 85cc will not have setups that include multiple heavy duty servos fitted to single surfaces. I mean if you figure you need four x 400 oz servos on your 25% to 30% ailerons then wow!!! You need a heavy duty power setup for that. But anyone running sub 200oz servos on these sized models will not have a power issue at all with this. Of course if you have your 100cc plane with 200oz servos fitted then its going to love this setup as well. But if you plan on those super powerful servos that need to be hooked up to the national power supply then this setup is not for you YET!!

If you want one, Email Smart-Fly on the Smart-Fly web site and he will get the brown truck guys to bring one post haste. Just have the plastic fantastic ready. $199.95 will see this baby in a box making miles your way.

So there you have it guys. Get em while they are hot.

Considering that you get a fully functional Power Expander, Smart-Fly optical ignition cut off, Super Regulator all on one board, this thing is just too good to be true.

Pea,

One of the key reasons I like it is it puts a whole lot of stuff in one place. No cables to the ign kill sender unit, no jumpers from the regulator to the Expander.

It saves a good chunk of coin when you start taking all the Deans plugs and stuff out of the equation.

Where do you hook the batteries in to it and how much does it cost?

I can pull 6 amps out of my setup on a 30% yak with 4 5985's and a 5955 just by wiggling the sticks with the engine off.

How many continuous amps can this thing deliver?
Can it handle 10 amps?

The batteries plug into the slot that says B. The batteries have to go on the front side of the regulator. You don't want your servos to get 8.4 volts.

On each side the first port is battery. The second ports are for charge jacks. The third port on one side is Ignition kill, on the other side it is the port for the fail safe pin switch.

All the other ports are for servos.

With the ignition kill you can select any channel on your radio. You run a jumper from the Ig kill slot to the channel you want to operate the kill from.

I believe the regulator is 5 amp continuous. It has a smaller heat sink then the super reg.

I have been running the prototype unit since February. I have it in my 87 Yak and 100" extra. Both planes are setup with single 8611A on every surface. I have never had the regulator get warm while working on the bench.

i though that using ultra deans connectors between the batteries and the PE was one of the reasons to buy it..
Actually i read that on SF's website.. in this case you connect the batteries using a conventional servo connector which can not handle as much amps as ultra deans.. once again thats what i read on their website. everything else seems great.

Here on the SF website: "unit has a built in, fixed 6.0-volt, 5-amp continuous regulator that can supply up to 15 amp momentary peaks"
