No I was right the first time.

Let's move this to another thread if you want to discuss it further.

First off, the AMA is an insurance distributer. They have no say over what kinds of models can be flown. I wouldn't doubt that they would pull their insurance over something like this though.

Second, can you prove that the 100 .lb faa uav/rc limit exist? I can't. I only found it refrenced one time and that was not in FAA rules. Here's what I did find though: http://www.uavm.com/images/ac91-57.pdf

Thirdly, what does your father working on EMS helicopters have to do with UAV's and RC aircraft being classified as such?

Fourthly, why would the FG staff want to close your account? FG isn't like the U or RCG. This site is a whole new breed of modeling. Where achievement is embraced.

p.s. Also, I believe that since the guy(Sensie) who origionally built the plane did similar stuff for NASA(ok, bad understatement) I think that he knows what the rules are, as well as those who are going to fly the plane.

Don't mean to go fanboy here, and pardon the pun, but I'm always blown away by what I learn from our members, and their history/experience in aviation and their careers. Thanks for sharing that with us!! I do have a question that's totally OT for this thread - can you share what it was like setting up the project, what you did, and how well the test performed? As I recall, it was supposed to test a new non-flamable fuel. I also remember large ginsu knife looking things that were placed in the desert to chop the wings off in strategic locations. I just googled and watched about 10 videos that brought back alot of memories of this event.

Thanks Mr. Sawyer not only for the big bird, but for bringing your experience to our members. This is all too cool.

Best--

MD
During my eight years at Dryden Flight Research Center as an engineering technician, we were invoved with hundreds of research programs, but as I recall, the CID (crash in desert) program drew a lot of attention. You are right, the test was mainly about fuel flamability. However, there where many other tests as well, and with much success. The plan was to fly into the knives, cutting off both wings in designated zones. This was goint to allow the fuel to pass through the degraders rendering the fuel mostly inert. That never happend because the airplane got into a slight PIO and the cutters wound up cutting into the one of the engines causing an explosion. Here is a story of an unofficial test that day. My dad was an avionics engineering guy at Nasa for some 30 years, and he was the last person out of that Boeing 720 before it's final flight into those knives. (Systems pre-flight cheklist) Just after take off he noticed he no longer had the hand held Motorola two way radio. It was not on the preflight check list, so it was left behind. After the crash, burn and all that water and chemical to put those flames out, that radio was recovered from the cockpit charred and wet, but it still worked perfectly.
I remember that they gave that radio to my dad on his retirment day and I bet it still works today.

Bob
