In brief,
The AMA is a secondary insurance distributer. They can not regulate what types of RC aircraft are flown worldwide, unless their insurance would be in question.

As far as the FAA goes, they really only care as to how close to an airport you're flying.

Moving on......

That's a lot of hinges!

The Staudacher will not be able to fly at events unless it is privately owned land and the AMA has nothing to do with it but we will be working on a 66% Ultimate that I will get at 100lbs. so it can be flown at AMA events. The Ultimate is not much smaller than the Staudacher. The Ultimate has a wingspan of 166 inches and the fuse is about 15 or 16 feet long. It will be powered by a 60HP 3w 684. I plan on having the Ultimate done sometime next year.
Thanks, John

Dido... The only other way they will care is if the aircraft is being used as a commercial operation such as aerial camera work, surveying, or something simmilar. Then it would be required to have a UAV liscense. So long as it is being flown for fun, no worries.

If it's done by mid May would you bring it to the JoeNall event?

Holy moly!! You worked on that Bob?!? That's freaking awesome dude, I remember following the test in popular science (I think) back when I was a kid.. Specifically 12. Sorry, dated myself! Don't mean to go fanboy here, and pardon the pun, but I'm always blown away by what I learn from our members, and their history/experience in aviation and their careers. Thanks for sharing that with us!! I do have a question that's totally OT for this thread - can you share what it was like setting up the project, what you did, and how well the test performed? As I recall, it was supposed to test a new non-flamable fuel. I also remember large ginsu knife looking things that were placed in the desert to chop the wings off in strategic locations. I just googled and watched about 10 videos that brought back alot of memories of this event.

Thanks Mr. Sawyer not only for the big bird, but for bringing your experience to our members. This is all too cool.

Best--

MD

your right about the world wide part but wrong about it in the united states and the faa , ama has the right to yank your ama and ban you from ever getting an ama card , which is required to fly at most events if you ever want to , and as far as the faa they would class this as a uav and would require a permit , oh and while i was at ama headquarters for ircha i asked what they thought of huge planes and found out that they are looking at this post , not to rain on any ones parade but thats the facts . i deal with faa stuff due to my father he is and a&P I/A that works on ems helicopters
