First congratulation to QQ for winning the world championship, you are way ahead of your time, congratulation to team USA as well.
One simple question, everyone knows you invented 3D, what was the reason you started flying 3D, how did it come to you and how did you know it could be done?
Thanks
Elie

Quique,
What are the chances of QQ Aircraft releasing a good, competitive pattern airplane?

Thanks,
Lee

Boogie, long answer for your question. I will just go to basic concepts. Every new airplane design is an extension of the previuos designs. This is how we learn little by little. I like drawing at actual size and I use a wall and enough room to be able to watch my designs from good distance and observe them as they were flying. Mainly my experience and some calculation will tell me what is right. Then the looks and style of the airplane comes from taste. The challenge is combine this two things. About coupling are many things can be done and believe me is not just one single thing, Sorry for being short but I do not know how to keep my writing not too long and boring.
Yak is a very special airplane for me. TOC 2002 was the debute of the Yak54 as R/C version in high level competition. When my dear friend Wayne Ulery built for me those 2 beatiful Yaks we did not have clue by then how popular that airplane would be. My Yak design produced by 3W and the one we (QQ aircraft)offer are both good designs. The one we produce (Yak 54 120") cost much less and is the latest design with all the upgrade after 5 years of experience flying my 150cc Yaks.
Take care and good luck. Quique

When flying a new design it sometimes pitches and rolls. If you would make a second version what would you do to tweak this out and when, for eg. if it pitches to the belly what would you change?

Congrats for your passion! Keep up! You were the one that started Yak 54 obsession and my biggest dream is to get the 3W or your Yak!

Thank you so much for your comments.
Talking about wind.....we have plenty in Santa Fe!. I think fly in the wind is good and make you a better pilot. Hard to say what wind speed should stop flying. Rules: FAI is 43 km/h I believe giant scale airplane most tournament is 20 knots. For your own decision when to stop? That depends mainly on safety and how you feel about it. The main thing with the wind is landing. If the airplane does not want to stay in the ground and wants to keep flying after you land I will say that is time to stop :-)
Take care and say hi to my dear Argentinein modellers! Quique

I live in Miramar, Argentina which is located next to the ocean. It is pretty windy year round. My question is, what is the maximum wind that is acceptable for practicing either F3A, IMAC or your invention 3D . Thank you so much.

Hi Leo, CG on Pattern airplanes are very important as it is on any other type of aircraft. Depending on the design CG varies a bit. I have a general rules that more or less work for most airplanes and give you a very close starting point. Fly upright into the wind pull to 45 make 1/2 roll to inverted. The airplane should stay without pushing or pulling the elevator to the count of 2 or 3 to then starts to slowly drop. This will give you an overall good feeling and close starting point for a pattern ship.
Take care. Quique

My question is:
What is the better way to set up or test my CG on an Pattern aircraft.

Quique,

Allow me, first of all, to echo the comments from everyone here. Congrats on your win this year at the world's and throughout your career. An accomplishment envied and admired by many.

Interesting that in an earlier post, you credit Ivan Kristensen. I've had the good fortune to fly with Ivan and he truly is a gentleman and a great ambassador to our hobby.

A little story that I'd like to share with you and, I guess, the rest of the FG community. A bit embarrassing but, what the heck.

Last year, I had the pleasure of meeting you at TAS. While on the plane, on the way to TAS, my friend Scot asked me who I was most looking forward to meeting. My immediate response, after Max and Biff of course , was you. So, we arrive at the field and we're walking towards the spectator area and Scot says, "Hey, isn't that Quique, right there?" You were chatting and having your picture taken with another fan and as he left, Scot called out asking if we could come and say hello and have our picture taken with you. To be honest I was a little overwhelmed and as a result, I wandered a little close to the horiz. stab of your plane. The first words you spoke to me were, "be careful of the aeroplane" and I looked down to see my leg, inches away from your plane. Typically, I'm very conscious of the aircraft that I'm wandering around. Be it a .40 sized trainer, or a 40%'er. We chatted for a few minutes and the only thing I could think of was what an idiot I'd been. One of those times where, afterwards I thought of all the things I wished I'd said, or asked you. Needless to say, I hope to have an opportunity to meet you again and have the presence of mind to not step on your plane and have a more candid conversation.

OK........... now to my questions. I hope you don't mind but, I have 3

1: This past year I started competing in IMAC. I had a run of bad luck/dumb thumbs and broke two airplanes which left me without a plane to fly in the Nationals up here in Canada. So, if you experience some bad luck, how do YOU maintain focus and motivation to keep at it? I don't know if you've ever experienced that kind of bad luck but, if you have, I'm sure it was a while ago.

2: Would you come to the contest I'm hosting at my home field this upcoming May? I'd cover your entrance fee

3: Will you forgive me for almost stepping on your plane?

Cheers,
Dave

ps: here's the pic that was taken then.
ps2: my apologies to the FG community for rambling

Quique, first off, congratulations to you on this monumental accomplishment!

Since my question was asked earlier above, I'll just ask you this:

Were you the one that convinced Jason to shave that "thing" off his chin?

Take care,

First of all, I am proud to have you as a fellow American and also a great representative of the US team. You are an amazing pilot and a very well respected family man. I also admire you for making wonderful aircraft that I own some of. QuiQue, thank you for coming to the Flying Giants and answering questions. You are seriously awesome sir. Please have a merry Christmas and a happy new year..... Keith

PS- I know it is not a pattern question, but I am buying your 100cc Yak. Why do you mount the wing so much lower than others with Yaks? Is this a secret or can you tell me? Beautiful paint schemes on the Yaks by the way!!!!
