Dear All, I finally got to fly the New Somenized 69", Yak-54. I got totall of 4 flights. Flight 2 and 3 are taped for your viewing. Here's my short report on this: Yak-54 69", Brio Scheme OS 1.20 AX, APC 16x8 JR 8411s Duralite 2 cell-2150 Li-Ion Duralite Heavy Duty Switch and Regulator AUW w/o SFG 8lbs 13oz In my first and second flight, plane was a little nose heavy due to a very light battery and a fairly heavy spinner (4.5 oz). Plane would pull towards the canopy a little but show an amazing stability in rolls, hover, harriers, point rolls. Only draw back was nose would drop in flat spins and I needed to push a little harder in inverted flight. 3rd flight I took the spinner off and plane just felt like my 102". Almost perfect CG. I had to lightly push in inverted flight, almost just a touch. Everything felt very easy to do. SFGs did help in harrier and knife edge stability. Made the rolls a little slower which would help those who want to learn 3D flying to have more control over the plane. It was a little harder to start a torque roll with SFG on because of more drag but you could still torque roll the plane. Again another advantage for sports flyer to learn this maneuver and be able to observe the plane torque rolling. Sometimes plane torque rolls so fast and strong that sport flyers are not able to keep up with it. I could get the plane to do that without SFG but if you put the SFG on, you will see a slower torque roll. Ailerons, Elevator and Rudder were as effective as a 50-100cc plane. Only difference was, plane felt LIGHTER and EASIER to fly. Quique recommends 17x6 prop but unfortunately my LHS didn’t have one so I test flew the plane with APC 16x8. Prop was lacking static pull but was great for precision flying. I would also recommend 17x6 if you would like to do more 3D than precision. The only thing I had problem with first 2 flights was the wheel pants After tightening the nut, that problem went away also. If you are looking for a plane to start learning 3D and Precision, this should be the answer to your need! We will have this video or another one later on www.QQAircraft.com. For now please watch video number 10 on www.RCModelAviator.com/Videos.html Plane will be available Mid June! Regards, Reza Gholamipour Quique's Aircraft Support |

Wow, this looks like a great Electric conversion too? What do you think of an E-version on this Yak?

You are absolutely right! This would be an excellent E-Conversion. I am thinking about doing it, in near future. Maybe even writing an addendum to the manual on the EConversion. I will keep everyone posted once I talk to Quique about this. Thank you, Reza |

I'm thinking about getting one of these. Which engine would be better for someone at 5000 ft. elevation, an OS 120AX or a YS 110?

I'm sure the YS110 would have way more power!

Reza - Any progress in the E-Conversion of this airplane? I want to build this out as an electric, but I would like to see how the experts do it first. Please let me know what power system(s) you are considering. Thanks, Ren |

Hi Ren, I am in the final stages of motor, ESC assembly but got distracted with the AMA show. I may not touch it until next week but here's the set up I am going to do: Castle HV85 Eflite 110 Outrunner I maybe trying different combos later and do a comparison but I am confident this will work with tons of power. I will keep you informed. Reza |

Reza, I have a Showtime 90 4D on a Power 110, Hangar 9 engine mount, Castle 110HV (just because I had one), 2 x 4s FlightPower 4250 Mah Lite batteries, 800 Mah LiPo Rx pack, HiTec 6975 servos, 17x12 APC E-Prop. Weight is around 9.25lbs. Watts is over 1700 average even higher for the first couple of minutes. The performance on this is WILD, WILD, WILD. I had an OS120AX and a Saito 125 before in the same airplane. Neither were even close to this setup - the power is just crazy. Flight times are anywhere from 10 to 15 mins! The Yak on this setup would be amazing - probably a full pound lighter and more wing area! Wow - can't wait to see the flight report. Last edited by crhammond; 01-15-2008 at 12:38 PM. |

CR, Reza - I also fly a converted ST 90 4D, however mine is in need of a diet! AOW on mine is ~11.5 lbs! Power system is as follows: AXI 5530/18 CC 110HV 11s2p A123's 4600 mah 20x10 APC E-prop Performance is phenomenal, with more than 2450 watts at take-off, with 10 minute flights mostly WOT. This is the power system I was planning on putting in the QQ Yak-54, however I am more concerned than ever about weight. With the difference in motor weight being nominal, the big difference must be in batteries. My 11s2p A123's must outweigh CH's 8s Lipo's by two pounds! Nevertheless, I am sticking with A123's and as soon as Reza gives report on his setup, I will build out a QQ Yak-54 69". Can hardly wait to read Reza's findings. Ren |

I almost went A123's as well - the power is amazing but they are MUCH heavier when you build a big pack of them. But then you do get a very durable setup, only really need 1 pack and can BLAST them at high charge rates without issue. You could go with a 1p setup and settle for 5 min flights. The performance would be outstanding!!! My packs weigh: 14oz each + .5oz for parallel wiring and connectors = 27.5oz 11s2p A123 (not including shrick wrap, wires, connectors etc) = 70g x 22 = 27.16oz * 2 = 54.32 plus add in some extra oz for wiring etc. So that is your weight right there... remove 11 cells and you will be about the same weight as mine but with less run time and even more crazy performance |
