Boy, did I ever git bit...

Finished structural mods and setup on the Icon today. Removed and replaced cabin bulkhead about 1" forward. Added extra bracing for motor stick and a mount for the ESC under the cowl. This moved the CG forward without the added 1.5 oz. lead that Jerry had in it. Balances purrrrrfect. Used dad's AR600 to set up flight pack and transmitter. Everything is good to go.

All finished with programming, with the battery still hooked up in the plane, I cycled the transmitter to get it out of programming mode. Big mistake.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz........... OOOOOOW!!!

The motor went full and the ICON attempted to take flight from my work table. Nice slice on the first knuckle of my social finger. But that's not what hurt the most. Drive gear stripped and magnet broken off the shaft of the HiMax. I could order replacement parts, Maxx Products carries them. About $25 would get me there. I decided to upgrade to the more powerful version of the same motor 2025/5300 instead of 2025/4200. Just $63, and I'll have a set of three pinion/drive gears to play with.

Hey FWB, that is a Castle 25amp ESC isn't it?

I'll save the bits and probably repair the old motor if I ever need a small inrunner.

Live and learn. The hard way.

Damm SlowHuck that sux. Thats almost as bad as an ESC putting out 17 volts and frying the whole set-up.

I think the ESC on the Filton is an 25 amp Castle. The size of motor that was in it would hover it at half power.

Yeah, my quess is 25amp too, since they only make 10, 25 and up. I just hope I didn't cook it in the incedent. Looks OK.

I trust you when you say the 4200 is an adequate motor. It's just that the 5300 is the same weight and dimensions for the same $$$. So why not? Mo power, Mo power. rated at 25amp ESC too.

mo power for the same $ is good. Might need a larger ESC cause of mo amps tho.

Alright, I gotta fess up...

Clank's E-Fight Ultimate has been re-kitted and I was at the sticks. At the field, Slow Huck was experiencing technical dif****ulties, so no fly. Patrick took pity and forced his transmitter into my hands after delivering the Ultimate to a safe altitude. It was good. Damn... this thing was fun. Whirly, twirly, point it and go. Aerobatic, neuteral-sability aircraft aren't that intimidating. Confidence swelled (bad thing). Loved elevators and transitioning from high-alpha to vertical pullouts. But I took it down to the first floor when I shoulda pushed the button for floor 3. Gust and dumb thumbs got the better and I cart-wheeled it. Not total destruction, but a half bottle of CA's worth and butt-load of humiliation.

The Colonel took it in stride. Couldn't help me much from feeling like schmuck. He didn't even mention it when FWB called as we surveyed the damage.

So a moment of silence is in order for Micro-Bastard. Down for the count, but hopefully not forgotten. A few globs of glue on the re-injured Weese bites and SH carnage might see it back in the sky. Pat... don't relegate it to foam chips... give it to me and I'll make repairs while you chase the next best foam thing. You can hold it in reserve.

It does (did) fly pretty darned good.

Les: It was worth seeing the smile on your face that everyone else gets when they fly that Ultimate. They make new foam every day. Calling Max for an FG Foamy now!
