Since the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing is here, NASA has been showing some imagery that celebrates this accomplishment. Look at this high resolution picture (keep clicking on it until it reaches full size) of the Apollo 11 LEM on the moon's surface with Buzz Aldrin standing in front. Man, it's somewhat crude when you see it this clearly. But it worked!

And NASA has a relatively new lunar probe called the "Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, LRO" that is taking some cool pics of the moon's surface. It has documented recent pictures of each Apollo landing site (as in the second photo below) which appear to be essentially undisturbed since the 70's! You can still see the astronauts footprints in the dusty surface.

Have a look at more pictures on the LRO site here.

Yeah, kind of reminds you of furnace ducting doesn't it ? I have said for a while that it is a miracle that we made it on the technology we had, but the real shame is that we were last on the moon just after I was born, and have been stuck in LEO since.

I'm glad that we are planning (for now, we will see what happens) to go back to the moon and beyond, but kind of disappointed that 40 years later we are back to capsules. I know it is proven technology, I know it is developed far beyond anything we had in the 60's and 70's, but the sci-fi geek in me thinks we should be doing better.

Yep, and in robotics in space too. My lament is just about manned space flight. I mean, we have had a couple of R/C trucks running around on Mars for 5 years now, amazing stuff. It just seems that since we were on the moon 40 years ago, we should have people on the moon and Mars permanently by now.

Matt and I just got back from another gig with the Radioactive airshow team. Yesterday was the first airshow at the Abingdon, Va airport.

Wow, what a beautiful airport. Last year they just had a flyin and car show, this year they decided to have a small airshow. They had a Pitts S2 routine, the obiligatory J3 w/ crazy pilot routine, a Yak 55 routine, T6 Texan etc. All were great. But, the best part of the show was the P-51 "Quicksilver". I had a chance to get up close to this plane on Friday long before the crowd arrived, and managed to snap a few pictures. WOW.

I've seen several P-51s up close, but this one if BY FAR the best I have seen. It was absolutely spotless, inside and out. He flew an aerobatic routine that was better than any P-51 routine I have seen, with the possible exception of Bob Hoover. When he made his wing-low camera pass, I literally had goosebumps!

I did not get a lot of pictures, and pictures certainly don't do this plane justice, but attached are a few that I shot.
