Default Failed One Winger At XFC (Video)

Hi guys,

I found this on Youtube. Looks like Carlos Vargas tried to enter the Bill Hemple Club, but failed on purpose for safety concerns. Incident is at 3:28.

He definetly made the right decision to dump it. Too dangerous to try to save it with all those people around.

I cant see the video here at work but does anyone know what failed in the wings. I believe Carlos flew a Carden. What type of maneuver was he doing?

hmmm..... Did the wing bolts just vibrate out? Was the wing in tact or did it blow apart?

He was flying a 42% Aeroworks Extra 260. His carbon wing tube simply snapped at the root of the wing. The wing came off totally intact and took a bit of the fuse with it.

In defense of the airplane... he was doing a pretty violent maneuver. He did it the day before with his Comp-Arf, which made an awesome screeching noise as he snapped it from full-throttle to a hover instantaneously. AWESOME maneuver, but just too much for that wing tube apparently...

Yep RJ got it perfect. .. in fact the wing was in perfect shape when it landed, not even a rib broken, the CF wing tube snapped right at the fuse/wing joint area. When they picked up the wing, it was flawless, except it had a huge piece of fuse still attached to it. and the sheered part of the wing tube still in the wing socket.

I was impressed just how well built and strong that wing was... I mean it was ejected very violently and it didn't even break at all!

Thanks guys. I thought he flew a Carden. Just was worried because I am working on gluing the wings together and wanted to know what extra to do to the wings so mine didnt blow apart. The plane is looking to sweet right now to even think about something like that happening when I could catch it in the building phase.

Here's a tip... with a Carden or Dalton MAKE sure you extent the phenolic so that it will come through the wings main root rib. Many people don't because it makes it hard as hell to sand the root foam of the wing to fit the fuse properly, but if you don't have the phenolic extend through the root rib, there is no final support of the wing tube by the fuse.
