Default NEW! High Current alternative to Li-Poly

Duralite has come up with new batteries that are called Li-Mg. These batteries are able of max continues discharge of 20c and 40c burst.

These batteries are not susceptible to vibration as much as Li-Poly batteries are, so they can be used in Giant Scale planes as well as Jets or power-box applications.

Specs as follows:

Non combustible chemistry
• Overcharge & Impact Tolerant
• Weighs 50% less than NiCds
• Highest Discharge - 20c continuous with 40c bursts
• Custom packs available
• Dual leads, Always use Duralite® Charger
• Also available Electric Motor Packs available in 3, 4, 5, 6S configurations.

Typical 2-cell Li-Mn has capacity of 3800 mah. You can use two of these packs and run 2 receivers on a 40% airplanes. The high discharge rate provides enough current to all of the servos installed in your airplane through any high current maneuvers.

These batteries were originally used in Robots where they needed a very high current. With little modifications they are now available and can be custom made to suit your application. A 4 cell redundant system will give you 7600 mah capacity at 7.4v and still can be charged using your Duralite charger.

I thought I share this with you guys. Here's the link to these batteries on Duralite website: http://www.duralitebatteries.com/batteries-mg.html

Thank you,
Reza

Li-Mg cells are not new. Apogee has been selling them for a good while. They are more robust than a lipo, but at a weight increase. The above mentioned specs are all correct I'm sure, but what wasn't said is that compared to top lipos like ThunderPower and FlightPower the power to weight ratio is much less. NOTHING can match the power to weight ratios of lipos. NOTHING. There are fine for RX packs and etc, but will not replace flight packs for electric models. Not if you want performance anyway on par with a lipo.

For non electric models the packs are a good idea.

It often helps to think in terms of water...
example...

Voltage is the "Pressure" that forces the water (Electrons) thru the pipe (Wire)
Current is the amount of water (Electrons) that go thru the pipe (wire)
Resistance would be the size of the pipe (wire) that impeads the flow
(Larger pipe (wire) = lower resistance)

Voltage can be "Pushed" by the battery... Current is what is "Drawn" by the load...

V = I x R
Voltage = Current x Resistance
Power = Voltage x Current

Amps and current are the same thing:
Amps/current is watts divided by volts.
Watts is volts times amps
Volts is watts divided by amps or amps times resistance
You can convert these into regular equasions and if you know any two values you can find all four.

Mithrandir, you beat me to it.

futurase,

These are meant for Jets, GS planes and powerbox systems. Like you mentioned they are not suitable for small electric planes becuase of the same reason you pointed out. Now I am not familiar with Apogee and their products! I didn't even know they have products in RC.

Thank you,
Reza

Too Expensive for what you get. For Giant Scale Li-Ion are plenty sufficient, especially at the price Duralites main competitor is selling for. . for Foamies, good Li-Poly are superior. I can see no reson to change to them when everything we already have works perfectly well for the same weight.

Just my opinion, in a pragmatic sort of way.

Does anyone know how they might compare with Fromeco Peerless? What are the common advantages/ disadvantages between the two? In simple terms.

The Peerless line of Cells from Fromeco are rated at a constant 2.5-3C discharge rate, and bursts to 5C. They are the best Li-Ion cells available (so says Fromeco), and a great leap beyond the usual LG Chem 18650A3 cells that make up the 2400 and 4800 MaH packs sold as "Relions" by Fromeco.

Both the LG Chem and Peerless cells are rated as superior when compared to the Li-Ion cells formerly sold by Duralite and other competitors. Check out the information on this URL: www.fromeco.org/ShopNEW/apeerlessadvantage.htm

This is according to Fromeco.

Besides the quality of the individual cells, the Peerless packs come with a charge balancer circuit, which is a time proven circuit in the battery power industry. Relion packs do not have any cell balance circuitry or over-current protection built into them.

Thanks for the info Kris, I have the Relions in two of my planes and I am really enjoying them so far. I will be starting a 40% soon and I was curious of the differences.
