Default 50cc on a budget?

Lookin at getting my first gasser. Want something in the 50cc range, but dont have a lot to spend. Was thinking perhaps a dl50, but what plane do I put it in? Not necessarily looking to hover (got 6 helis to do that) but dont want to be too short on power either.

Cheers in advance for any suggestions!

If its a first gasser and you're on a budget, take a look on this and other sites for used 50cc planes. Extras and Edges will generally fly very smoothly and have a long smooth glide path to landing. Yaks may be a little better at 3D, and will drop speed faster when you let off the throttle.

Generally, you can find a good ARF, ready to fly with motor and everything for around $1500, sometimes less.

DL 50 - $390
GP CAP 232 - $315 (sometimes as low as $275 with discounts)
6 JR 126's - $200
Smart Fly ignition kill - $50
MPI heavy duty switches - $30
2 1500mAh NiMh - $40
Vess 22B - $30

$1055

You could always go used. Plenty of good deals out there.

I have been longing for a pitts special ever since I was a kid, and untill thisafternoon I thought the greatplanes 1/3 pitts was no longer available, which crushed my dreams, and I thought I needed to find something else. But alas, A hobby shop right here in oz has 1 left (well had now) and it is mine!! Now my dilemma is what engine to put in it? I have been eyeing off a DZY 48cc twin to put in it, but not sure whether I am better off getting a single instead, and if I do what one?

What are your thoughts on this?
And as I wont be doing 3d type stuff or hucking (whatever that is) would the spektrum 821 servos be good enough? 4 on ailerons 2 on elevators and perhaps get a bit better servo (open to suggestions) for the rudder.

Thanks for the other input too guys!

If your on a budget go for the DL50.

For servo's the Hitec 645MG's are good value for money, but any thing 12kg+ torque and metal gears will work. You really need metal geared servo's in the big models.

Hey Beejay,

Congrates, really great plane that one, Buzz (and now Dom) has it with a DA50 on Pipe... Its pretty nuts!!

The DL50 is perfect for this application with a 23x8 Prop, and std Muffler (although you will have to swap it for a canister for IMAC).

As for servos you dont need much on ailerons as you have one on each aileron (4) I used 5475HB on my 50cc Ultimate and they were great but even the 475 HB would be fine also, you do want some thing a little better for rudder and elevators. I would go a 5955 or 5945 on rudder, and again on elevators if you can afford it (can you afford not to)..
Your choice of course but I had a bad run with the 645MG's developing a lot of slop after only 10 flights and these are 8Kg servos I think this was a bad servo not that the plane needed more, the ideal would be 5945's in the tail and 5475's on ailerons. Try not to skimp here it will make all the difference to how it flys...

Use a Match Box to sync the Ailerons...

Have fun you'll love this plane if you show it some love....

But the Hitec 645MG's are only 7.7kg not 12+?

Sorry my bad I ment to say 5645MG's.

As stirlo said go with the best servo's you can afford. IMO they should all be metal geared (except throttle), the analog 645's will be fine on the ailerons, and 5645's or 5985 would be fine for rudder and elevator.

As far as engines go. I have a DZY 48 in a CMPRO 330 which weighs about 6.8kg. They run smooth (as you would expect on a twin) but as far as power goes they are just OK. The DA50 has way more power. Just some feedback for you about engines choices. Reed valves can be a problem - bit flimsy.

Cheap 50cc contender:

80" Katana
50cc CRRC-Pro Engine
Engine and Airframe under $750.00

Using Blue-Bird 630MG servos 14Kg at 6V.
