Ha ha that looks like fun. You need to put some roundup in it and hire yourself out to little hobby farms etc.

Agreed Cookie - In fact mine was I had the same plane and the same failure of the same wing only difference was the outcome (I needed a dustpan and brush!)

Thumbs up Re: Giants From Down Under

Hey Bones. Love ya work. Too bad about the Extra.

I guess its true that all model planes have a used by date, they just dont put it on the box

Zac said you can fly his new Yak54 at the next IMAC comp if you like.

BTW still have your battery! (we can do a deal, wink wink)

I managed to take some noise readings yesterday and this is my first attempt at using a sound level meter to quantify in flight noise as very quiet (VQ), acceptable (Acc), or too noisy (TN) in a similar way to how a pair of IMAC judges would assign the score based on their perception.

The sound level meter was mounted on a tripod at a 45 degree angle (elevation) and at 60cm above the ground. It was placed at a similar distance from the pilot/runway to where the judges would normally sit. As each pilot flew their sequence, a series of four, 1 minute long noise samples were taken and the peak reading of each sample was recorded. The four samples were then averaged to give a relative noise reading for the flight. Ambient noise level was also recorded as a reference.

A daily average was calculated based on all readings taken on the day and then the reading of each flight was compared with the daily average based on the following parameters which are related to the way humans perceive noise:

At 3dB of daily average = just quieter/louder
At 5dB of daily average = louder/quieter
At 10dB of daily average = twice as loud/quiet

Pilots are identified by an alphanumeric code where the letter indicates the person and the number indicates the flight number. So “D2” means pilot D’s second flight of the day.

The result is a chart where individuals and actual dB readings aren’t identified but each flight is compared to what could be considered a “normal” sound level. I think this is the intent of the noise scoring system.

Reading the table:

Given that we usually use two judges and that a noise penalty would only be given if both judges record a TN, the following results are what you might expect to see from both judges:

Range............................................. Judge 1................ Judge 2
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Half as Loud – Quieter = ....................VQ ......................VQ
Quieter – Just Quieter = .....................Acc .....................VQ
Just Quieter – Just Louder = ...............Acc .....................Acc
Just Louder – Louder = ......................TN ......................Acc
Louder – Twice as Loud = ..................TN ......................TN

I hope this makes sense…..

More explanation:

Pilot X is a fictional pilot to demonstrate TN and VQ (all other pilots are real). On their first flight, pilot x recorded a noise level in the “Louder – Twice as Loud” range and would be very likely to get a TN from both judges.

Remember that a TN penalty or VQ bonus is only applied if both judges score TN or VQ. So all (real) flights on the day were acceptable however there were two flights where a TN might have been issued by one of the judges and there were four flights where a VQ might have been issued by one of the judges.

Pilot D was just short of getting a noise bonus on their first flight.

Okay Im confused...sorry guys...excuse my ignorance...I know it has probably been explained before.

Please done paste me the mandated rule book back...just nice and simple for me please

I am a very simple person...

I'm trying to work out what is rated as noisy

Is it throttle control we are measruing...ie do you blast around unecessarily.

I thought this was the case.

or is it actual dB ratings. ie 3 blade prop is quieter etc.?

I suppose I am trying to understand the intention of the originator of this rule.

I know in pattern it is dB rating..

the reason for my question is I am trying to work out if I need to replace my 2 blade with a 3 blade.

ie if it is dB then yes...if it is throttle management...then no within reason.

Thanks in advance for explaining

Rob,

Go to http://www.scaleaeros.com.au/ and open "General Rules" (on the left of the home page).

Read section 5.

I am mostly interested in the in-flight noise level as per section 5.4

Thanks Rhino

So that reads to me as the interest is in unecessary blasting around the place. ie using too much power when not required.

I gather it could also be used if the unit was missing a muffler or something like that.

I was interested as the glow plane I fly is very noisy but has a standard muffler and prop....just a stadard nitro sound.

Also the Edge I fly has a 2 blade and is a little louder than others but not too loud.

So in summary "presentaton" has reasonable measures been made to keep noise reasonable....and are you using excessive power.

Thanks
Rob
