Since the meter is placed in a similar location to the judges, height/distance effects should be the same on the graph as what is perceived by the judges. Sound levels at other locations around the field are outside the scope of this testing.

Wind could be interesting and I was glad to have had a day with less than 5 kt breeze. The foam wind-screen on the meter seemed to do a good job and the ambient reading was much the same throughout the day. I was watching the meter to see if any of the readings were affected by wind or other sounds from the field such as the caller or the pilots giggle (Richo). I'm keen to do some more testing on a windy day to see how the results are affected.

An interesting fact: On one sample, 50 seconds of prop and engine noise were exceeded by the aileron squeal of a compy doing a throttle off snap on base height, center box.
My point is that as a judge I take into account the distance the model is flown. The model may not make your ears bleed because it is so far out but if you can hear the prop rip bouncing off the hill behind you etc you will still quite likely hand out a TN score.

Official FG Bad Ass!: Hand selected award for being a BAD-ASS member, and an awesome dude in general. - Issue reason: Feral gets this award for being the first person that we know of who tatted a model airplane manufacturer to his ankle. Now that's bad-ass dedication to a kick-ass hobby. Nice job dude!

benny you also need to take into account the size of your head is not proportional to anything smaller than a 3m airframe. therefore the X reading on the scale would significently change your percieved sound levels.

Hi Chaps, I have sent an e-mail informing those who entered the Monarto IMAC event that it has been postponed due to forecast gale force winds and rain for this weekend, I must have used up my quota of good weather with the Naracoorte, Barossa and Constellation comps.

I am looking at rescheduling for either the 26th & 27th of July or the 9th & 10th of August depending on interest.

If not it will be later in the year, anyone want to buy some trophies, my visa is getting very low...

I'm using the following as a guide. I could be wrong:

How do we quantify sound?
Because of the wide range of sound pressures encountered, a special scale, the decibel scale, has been developed. The sound level increases by 3 dB (or decibels) when the actual sound energy present is doubled. Conversely, half the sound energy must be eliminated to reduce the level 3 dB. A six decibel change indicates four times as much sound, and a 10 decibel change 10 times the sound. However, the ear does not perceive these changes to be so large. Most people find a 3 dB change barely noticeable. A 6 dB change is clearly noticeable, and a 10 dB change is perceived as a doubling or halving of loudness. This is very important. It means that 90% of a given sound energy must be eliminated before most people will judge a sound half as loud.
People do not hear very low-frequency and high-frequency sounds as well as they hear sounds in the middle speech frequencies. A special electronic filter is used in sound meters to simulate this characteristic of the ear. For many environmental sounds it gives a simple, single-number descriptive level that correlates with the way people judge the loudness of the sound. This measure is called the A-weighted sound level. The units are usually written dBA or dB(A).

Chris,
Congratulations on the baby mate and welcome to the club. Child birth certainly is a humbling experience,I know Ive been through it few times and on all occasions I have felt somewhat inadequate in more ways than one, now the real fun begins.

And just a quick not to all the Maitland crew for putting such a great event, the IMAC bug has certainly bit me on the bum and just checking my diary to see which ones we can go to next. I have a stack photos and will post some when I can work out how to do it.

Thanks again and hope to catch up with you all again

Norm

Average was 61.1 dB

Ambient was 42 dB

Remember that it is the average of a series of peak values of 1 minute samples. Not the average sound produced by a flying plane.

Ambient is roughly what the meter settled to when no one was flying at the time.
