Not such a good day at the field today Only got 1 and 1/2 flights in before my rudder servo (5955) burned up during a KE to KE negative snap.

I nailed the snap but the instant side slip gave up the lack of rudder, I rolled level and turned downwind. I wasn't sure if I'd broken a cable or it was just blow back so I pulled verticle to check rudder controls. Wiggled both directions and nothing, pushed over the top and setup for an approach. Got her lined up and the tail was wagging pretty hard, just as I cleared the fence the tail wag stopped and I touched down just safely. As the model rolled passed I could smell plastic burning so I shut off the motor and ran out to turn off the RX. Sure enough rudder servo was smoking hard and the canopy was full of smoke and fumes.

I had previously had some blow back but I had solved the issue with better geometry and it has been fine for some time now. Not sure if the failure was due to the previous/current setup or just a random servo failure. Just glad it didn't lock hard over becuase that would have been game over.

Glad to hear you got it down in one piece

A single rudder servo on a 2.6m model is probably not enough... get yourself an swb self adjusting rudder tray and a couple of 7955's. Even if a servo dies you sould still have some rudder (enough to get it back to middle).

Good thing your batteries were up to the job, otherwise the voltage drop might have been fatal

Yeah I'm glad I'm running the PE as it passed the current with ease. If it had of been straight into to Rx it may have been lights out. Strange that the servo would wag like that as it burned up, I thought it would just cook and fail. Wasn't sure if I could get it home in one piece with the tail waging so bad.

I currently running a swb single tray, but I think the 5955 is the absoulte minium to run now. I think others with single servo setups are running futaba somethings or JR 8711's.

Thumbs up Re: Giants From Down Under

Rusty -

Wild Hare said 2 rudder servos were a waste of money and added weight. Glad I listened to Richo and Mick as I am currently installing 2 x JR 25kg servos on a SWB self adjusting tray on my 2.6
More weight, yeah but peice of mind plus I am mounting it it up the front as I can to get the weight off the tail end.

I'm not 100% convinced it was caused by the setup. These servo's have a history of burning up. I can think of at least 3 of the giants down under members that this has happened to.

Rusty, what size arm have ya got on the ya rudd servo, i just stuck with the 3" arm on a 8711 to keep the mechanical advantage on my wild Hare sukhoi with no probs.

Anyone out there looking for a small imac plane with the power of a pattern plane , i just found one today when i test flew my comp ARF 2.1 yak with DA 50 on KS 1060 tune pipe. Ballistic Was spinning mejzlik 22x10 at 7100, would not load up up in any thing i threw at it, good fun.
