Interesting thread.
I imagine that the actual temperature is not as much a consideration as establishing a baseline. Now, whether that baseline is 10,20 or whatever degrees out may be less important than a noticeable spike in the trend you have experienced with your engine.
I used the search function for this thread as I intend buying an infra-red unit and wanted to bone up on it....knowing stuff all about them.
As for calibrating, I have a quality temperature controlled DURATECH soldering iron and plan on using that to set a baseline which could be more in line with the temperatures expected.
Opinions appreciated as this is a new area for me.

Hello All The instructions for the raytek infared units state "the unit will not give accurate readings on bright surfaces" I paint the spark plug area with flat black, and get 300-375 degrees with the engine running. Best to read the instructions.
