Default DA-100 tuned pipes set up

Hello
I am looking for a two tuned pipes for the 35% Extra 260 (http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=HAN1000) and DA-100 combo. The plane will be set-up for IMAC and precision flying only. I expect the weight between 28 to 29 lbs. I am looking for low noise, great mid range and i want to turn 28x10 Mejzlik (+6700 rpm) or PT models 28x10 prop over 6500 RPM and i am at sea level. I fly IMAC and i need the maximum power of the DA-100 can get to perform long vertical uplines and vertical snap rolls. I need slow dowlines and i prefer to use 28'' prop instead of 27''. I want plenty of power not only ''enough'' power. For these reasons, i am looking for tuned pipes setup. I am on the 5th gallons on my DA-100 and it's ready to ask max power.

Questions:
1) What's the difference (performance) between MTW RE-2 tuned pipes and KS-1060 on the DA-100?
2) Are the new MTW tuned pipes good idea for IMAC?
3) Will i loose midrange throttle by tuning the 28'' prop for high 6000 RPM instead of using 27''prop over 7000 RPM?
4) What header lenght should i use for 28x10 Mejlzick?
5) Will i have power gain buy going with tuned pipes and 28'' prop or the tuned pipes are more suitable for high speed application and smaller props?

Please feel free to comment
Daniel

If you really need more power, I would suggest a 3W 106. But if you already have the engine, or just want to stick to a DA-100, then you sure need the pipes.

I think it might be hard to get high rpm's on a 28x10 without losing midrange. From what I have read, the tuned pipes that give you the best midrange are the Manfred Greves tuned pipes, while still giving you a decent top end. I've heard the KS give you more top end.

I'm sure some of the guys like razor or others with more pipe knowledge will jump in.

Good luck!

Vic

You would likely have to run a VERY long header to get any performance out of the 28X10, like 14+inches, I'd guess. I would recommend considering a 27X10 prop. You will probably like it better, anyway, and most pipes will run best on the stock header length of 11-12 inches with that prop. I am actually getting the same plane and also putting tuned pipes on it, but I expect a 27-28 pound finished weight by going with EScomposite pipes ( http://www.escomposites.com/petrol.htm ). They will likely be an easier retrofit, too, because their diameter is just about the same as the MTW75 cans - 2". The 1060's a noticeably larger, and with the can installation already being so close to the wing tube, I can imagine retrofitting them being that much more of a pain.
Also, FWIW, Mike has been flying that plane with a 27X10 this whole time and prefers it over the 28. From the videos I have seen, there is already plenty of punchout, so swinging that same prop at a higher RPM will only be better. If you go with a 28X10, you will likely get downgraded right off the bat due to the LOUD prop rip, too.
As for the midrange, I do know that the 1060's are "pipey".
For the weight savings alone, the composite pipes are a far better choice, IMO.

1) I posted the thread in DA forum because i already have the engine.
2) I eliminated ES composites pipes from my list because they do not last very long and they crack after 20-30 flights. I usually do 8 to 10 flights on each flying session so, 20 flights is a normal weekend for me.

Another shamless plug for the 3W 106. The man was asking about a DA 100 not a 3w. Can you read ?

I tought the PT loads and spool up quicker than 28x10? We have 2 pilots flying IMAC advanced with PT 28x10 and they can get 6100 RPM on ''homemade'' canisters and the other 6500 RPM on AMT 80CC tuned pipes.

I had KS1060's on my 100. They worked really well spinning a 28-10 Mejlik prop in my comp-arf 2.6 Yak. The midrange wasnt that bad, I did need to program a bit of a throttle curve though.

I didnt see a huge jump in revs on the ground when I switched to tuned pipes, however in the air they gave me a lot more power than the standard mufflers I was previoulsy running.
27 inch props are too small, I tried them and they just made a heap of noise for no added performance. IMO.
