My DA 50 is fitted in my freestyle 84" Yak with a full carbon tuned pipe. When she runs she goes well producing 7,400 on a 22/10. Only 3 gallon total through it's nearly new. First two gallon run in as recommended on mineral now on 50:1 synthetic. New lipo through power-box digi switch. New plug. I've just flicked until I can't flick no more. Cleaned plug often, seems to be wet enough. I've choked and not choked, nothing. Testing the plug external I see a spark occasionally but not every turn of the prop. I'm not sure if this is normal. I've just taken the engine out and checked the carb and valves. All is like new. She suckes fuel in when flicked as seen going through thee tube. I've just tried putting the needle settings back from 1 1/4L 1 3/4H to the book 1 5/8L 1 7/8H but still won't start. Has any one a setting used with the carbon pipe? Any suggestions gratefully received before I throw this engine as far as my aching arm can manage. She used to sart well, but now she just won't start. What can be wrong when she does start she goes so well? |

Call or email Desert Aircraft. They have the best customer service and they can help you trouble-shoot it. If my DA50 sits for months sometimes it is difficult to start. I just pull the spark plug, squirt some WD-40 into the cylinder and put in a fresh plug and she starts right up. I've learned this technique over the years with other small 2-strokes, like lawn mowers and spin trimmers. I would contact DA before making any changes, though.

i wouldnt throw the motor. i would throw the pipe. some motors just dont like to be on pipes. put a stock muffler back on and see if it will run correct..

When your checking for spark, make sure the prop is flipped quickly. The ignition only fires at a fairly fast magnet speed. A defective ignition can still fire the plug out side of the cylinder, but miss-fire under compression. Has the ignition ever been fired/tested without a plug in the cap? Check the wires for any possible breaks at the rear of all connectors. Has the red pickup sensor connection been disconected since it ran well? If so, check the polarity of the wires to insure the connector is not plugged in backwards. Check all wires including the sensor wires for any damage. Especially any areas where the wires might have been been sharply bent which can damage the core wire under the insulation. It may be a good idea to bipass the current battery and switch and use a 4.8 or 6 volt NiCad to just to insure nothing is wrong with the Lipo pack or regulating switch. Does anyone near you have an ignition that you can borrow for a quick test? If the problem persists, please let us know so we can get it taken care of here or by Toni clark's Practical Scale (our European distributor and service center).

Yeah that's good support. Great ideas. DA's start so easy, if yours doesn't...something simple is wrong. Trying a different battery fixed a recent problem of mine. Like he said, try no switch straight up. Gotta start with the simple stuff first. Visual inspections of all ignition wires is good idea and easy. If you're getting fuel and no pop, it's electrical. |

UPDATE: This morning I travelled to my friend's to check my ignition module on his DA: Nothing, switched back to his own module and she fired up staight away. Tried different battery directly, bypassing the switch and nothing. Back to his own module and she fired first time. Conclusion, pretty deffinite I would say, is that the ignition module is faulty. But why? and is it responsible for ruining my power box battey? I'm a bit cheesed off, so this afternoon I flew my trusty zenoah and now I'm smiling! |
