Help! Overcharged Relions

About a month ago, I accidentally charged my two 5200 maH Relion packs at 2.5 amps for 5-7 minutes each. Since that time both packs behave in an identical fashion. I charge them with a Triton charger at 150 ma - they charge no higher than 7.7 volts. Now over the past week they will charge no higher than 7.5 volts.

They seem to hold this charge with no trouble and power the servos very well, but I have this bad feeling that they are going down the tubes.

If you have any rituals which will bring these babies back, I'll sure give them a try.

HELP.

Ron

Absolutely get them checked. Check them against another setup , with equipment that is separate from yours.

A resistive charging cable can make screwy things happen, too.

2.5 amps is w/in the allowable charge amperage published by Fromeco. I believe they say the max charge rate is 1C (5.2 amps) with an optimal range of 0.5c to 0.8c (2.6 to 4.1 amps) on the 5200's.

They also mention that with the triton especially, you need a charge lead with as little resistance as possible.

How old are the packs? Have you checked them with a different tester to see if they read differently (i.e. charger is messed up). Also, have you tried a different charger to see if they just arent being charged fully due to a problem with the charger? Just throwing some things out there to try.

Agree with all the above...Are you charging / checking them through switches?? If so maybe try direct.

RC Free,

Your charge Rate is actually just fine.

Every bodies advise here is good.

What I would do is this. Ditch everything you are using now, ( not literally just for a charge cycle or two) to charge and check voltage. If you have a buddy with Lithium Ion Gear use his gear to both charge and load check. I would even suggest using a different power supply.

Disconnect everything, if you have the batteries in the plane on switches or extensions, Yank umm.

Once you have your batteries free plug them into the charger (with as short of a lead as you can find). They should go to 8.4. If they do, (the fun part begins) back track and figure out what is wrong.

The symptoms you are describing are not a usual failure mode. So I am thinking it is something other than bad cells.

If all else fails send um back, but remember all I can do here is Charge them and load graph them. If there is nothing wrong, you are still going to have an issue on your end that will need to be trouble shot at some point.

Hope that helps.

Kurt, et al,

I removed the packs which started this thread. I purchased two new 5200 Relion packs, charged them with my bench Triton charger to 8.38 Volts with no trouble (I have a Triton2 which I use as a field charger - this is the charger which will not charge the old packs beyond 7.5 volts). I will charge the old packs on the bench charger and let you know what happens. Thanks for the feed back.

Thanks for all the input guys

As per my earlier post, I have charged the old packs on my bench charger. They charge just fine to 8.38 Volts. I guess I can start a new thread to figure out what is wrong with my field charger.

Sorry for the tempest in a teapot!

I'm sorry if I offend you with this question.. but it's happened to me.. If you are using a 12v battery for the field charger, is that battery charged? If not, it will not peak your batteries....
