Welcome Kurt and Mike. I know you guys have always been on top of customer support and answering our questions. Now its really nice to have you guys here, so I only have to jump sites when I break out the ol' VISA. Speaking of that...got my TNC tach from Andy. Good news is the TNC is better than advertised...bad news is my engines are not...LOL! Thanks for bringing back another great product.

Hi All,

Thanks for all good words.

I can shed a little light on this topic of regulator sharing.

First thing that needs to be considered is, the regs will never share perfectly. This is due to many things, connectors, wiring, and the regs not being set to the same VDC.

The very first thing that needs to be done is, the regs need to be matched. This is more than just setting the Regulators to 6.0 volts. To get it right you really have to set the regs at the Millivolt level, or 6.001. Here is the reason why. If you are only using 6.0 as a reference and you have 2 regulators going into 1 receiver, you could be a lot more imbalanced than you think…

REGULATOR 1: You have REG1 set at 6.0 or what you think is 6.0 it may really be set at 6.099.

REGULATOR 2: You have REG2 set at 6.0 or again what you think is 6.0 it may really be at 6.002.

As you can see from these final numbers, this is a very large difference between the two regulators. Our regulators do not really droop a whole lot under load so REG1 is going to be supplying all the power to the system. REG1 will only start to share when your current spikes start to go over 10 amp, this will happen a lot in the bigger planes 35% to 40%, however the spikes will only last for Milli/Nano second time frames. This is not enough time to get any visible sharing with the regulators.

A good place to be, will look something like this below……….

REG1 6.002
REG2 6.008

The numbers above are very repeatable with our regulators, not the actual numbers but the span between them. The more you can close that gap the better they will share.

There are other issues with sharing that have nothing to do with the Voltage setting. The Wiring/connectors most of us use are either a JR or Futaba Plug as our final output into our RX’s these connectors Suck! Unfortunately they are the “”standard””, and we have to live with them.

If you take the example above,

REG1 6.002
REG2 6.008

Now throw in a bad Day in China, or too much Rice wine the night before, and you still have problems with matching up. This has to do with the Crimps in the JR and Futaba connectors. If these crimps are bad, your voltages are going match just fine, however as soon as you put Load on that connector you will start to see an imbalance, the more the load the more the imbalance. The only way to fix this is to start slowly cranking up the regulator voltage of the battery that is not draining as fast. The other option is to send it back into Fromeco and we will replace the connectors and wires so that you can get some sharing.

Please remember they are never going to match perfectly, no mater what you do.
