I live in Victoria, BC Canada and have grown real tired of rainy winters. I have this idea that I should visit NZ with my wife next year and enjoy a New Zealand summer. The problem is that I don't know where to go. I'm 60 yrs old, long retired and have flown RC since I was 11. I fly everything from an indooor foamy to a 50% Hempel Edge. From a QQ Python to a Proctor Albatross. From a MA Extreme to a Vario Bell 47G. From an Eraser XE to a 5.5m Fox. From a Mantis electric F3B to an Enigma. I used to compete but don't anymore because my thumbs aren' up to it and I've mellowed. I'm low maintenance at the field, safety first, last and always and believe that sharing is the best way to build the hobby. Any advice as to where I should go and plant myself for two or three months next winter (your summer) would be GREATLY appreciated. Most important is a "Canuck friendly" groups of modellers. Budget is a consideration but not overriding. Hope to hear from some friendly Kiwis. Brian Weekley Victoria, BC |

Come to Christchurch. Joe Wurts found it was the place to come live so follow his example ![]() ![]() There are several friendly clubs within 30min drive of most places. I would be happy to give you a model to fly if you come and show you around the local sites. I fly Indoor, Scale, Gliders (slope, scale, F3B), aerobatics.. you name it i probably fly it, so could accommodate you with everything

Go anywhere but Gore.. The old Man above can't work a computer but can catch a fish if you like that sort of thing... The majority of aeromodelling is done in either Dunedin or Christchurch in the South Island (which has the best scenery - and not as many bogans from Hamilton) or if you do want to visit the north island, probably Hamilton or Auckland? There are a lot of piper cubs in Hamilton but they drink the right beer... It depends what you really like... I don't know where the scale modellers hang out up there but if you like aerobatics Hamilton is probably your best bet... Otherwise come to Christchurch and we'll look after you

Well, nothing as fancy as NZ but you could alway come to Arizona! This is a beautiful state and you wont freeze like you do where you are now. There are TONS of RC activities in Arizona, you name it there is a flying event of it here. We have the Grand Canyon, Indian Ruins, Kitt Peak National Observatory, Snow in the mountains if you start to miss the skiing, we have lakes for fishing, forests, deserts, just about everything you could want. You can drive from one side of the state to the other in about 6.5 hours. Oh, did I mention that there is a TON of RC activities? IMAC, Jet Rally, Scale events, Racing events, Control line events, Cars, Helicopters, Cars........ EVERYTHING. Come on Down! Bill Hempel |

Thanks guys ... this is just the information I need to get on with some trip planning for next Summer in NZ. Please keep any information coming. I'll spend some time online checking out Christchurch and Hamilton. Any suggestions on long term accomodation would also be appreciated. Three months at hotel rates would be a little steep. Hey Bill .. Arizona is a possibility for this year if I can get my taxes done early. I love your big Edge and plan to fly it at our clubs airshow in August. I tried to cross paths with you at the AMA convention in January but every time I went by your booth you were off partying or something. Probably a good this that we didn't face to face or I would be building a big Cub this spring. If I did make it to Arizona for a couple of months this year where would you suggest I locate to do some flying while keeping my wife happy. Thanks again everybody. Brian Weekley Victoria, BC |

Brian man, do you really think you can escape our wet winters? LOL Thats why I fish hard this time of year. Lets me forget I can't fly a new plane until spring. Good balance between seasons That reminds me, I am getting my new Boat. Flying down to Monterey in a couple weeks to pick it up. That should provide me with a little sun.Hey have you put the Python up yet? Talk soon |

Highlights .... The Python is ready to rumble. Great kit and I'm dying to see how it flies. I just can't bring myself to go out to the field and maiden it with frozen fingers. I've decided to make this an ARF building season. Next up is a 3W Xtra Fun followed by a 3.1M pilatus tow plane and a 120" QQ Yak. There's more in the works but I'll hopefully be in Arizona by then. I sure do hate tax time or I'd be there already. How did you equip your Python and I hope you are going to make it to our Airshow this year. Brian |

Brian, I will definitely be at the show this year. As far as how I equipped my Ultimate, well I am still waiting for the infamous DA 170 to rear it's head. Chances are though that I will end up getting a DA 150 on greives pipes. It is a proven and straight forward install. I know the strain of 3W's are stump pullers, but I can't help think that they are also more of a "tuners" motor as well. Anyways , thats here nor there. It will really depend on what Dave releases as far as a DA is concerned. In the mean time , I helped Rob set up his ZDZ 80 RVJ, Shaun's 115, and my ZDZ 80 rvj. I also completed a j-3 cub for this summers float fly. Make sure to call me when you decide to maiden that Python ![]() HL |

If you were to stay in that plane for a couple more hours the south coast of New South Wales (South of Sydney) is about as good as life can get . Very stable weather , low wind , nice and warm and lots of places to fly . New Zealand and summer are not two words you here in the same sentence to often .

Stu: Ouch!!!! I can see the Kiwi's closing the border to their neighbours as we speak. I never really gave much thought to seeking the sun down under. I always thought that I wasn't man enough to drink Australian beer. My navy friends tell me that you boys eat the can after you drink the beer in one gulp! Maybe its time to broaden my horizons. But first let me get it straight ... how many varieties of poisonous snakes do I have to deal with at your field if I come up short of the runway???? Brian |
