Finally getting on with it. I felt the tail didnt have enough torsional stiffness so I added a 12mm balsa insert between the stab anti rotation pin and the base of the fin. Took a bit of work to get the template right but I have now glued it in.

The legs will have 10 layers of carbon uni and 2 layers of 200 gm carbon cloth on 45 deg. bias for torsional stiffness. To make the 200 gm carbon easy to handle I am gluing a layer of 76gm glass to it (also on the bias). To handle the glass I cut a suitable size card template and taped it to the glass. Then lightly spray glued it and stuck it to the carbon. Made a template to cut the parts.

That looks great Rod, a neat and simple mould. What weight of carbon Uni are you using in the legs ? and what thickness of leg do you plan on finishing up with ? I used 200gm in the Raven, and like you combined that with some cloth for torsional stiffness, plus some 6 ounce glass to save some carbon cloth cost ! I think, about 35 layers in all. I have just got some 600 gram carbon uni from Fib/supls it's 0.95mm thick, should make laying up easy, though I'm a little concerned about getting it wetted out thoroughly. It wasn't all that expensive either at $30 a meter x 620mm wide, and considering I only need a third of the number of layers. One more question, do you lay your cloth in the Fuz mould dry and wet it out in situ, or do you wet the cloth out first on the bench and then place it ?? Regards, Barrie. |

Hi Barrie I'm sorry I am not sure of the weight of uni, I have 2 weights here I am using the heavier one. Looking at the FG supplies site it could be 450 gm. Wetting out is definately an issue with heavier material. I am going to try consolidating the carbon in a vac bag before putting it in the mold. Will put up some pics later today. I always put the glass into the mold dry. However I havent tried putting it in wet so I have no opinion on which is best. Rod |

Wet out the uni carbon and squeezed out excess epoxy in vac bag. Did 1/2 a leg at a time for better effect. It doesnt look like much came out because there are quite a few layers of paper towel. Got them in the mold with the bias cloth top and bottom used plenty of resin here for a wet look. Used peel ply on top of all as a release for the paper towel.
