Rod, You can make a unit similar to what the Japanese use by drilling out a 1/4-20 nylon bolt in a drill press and using some music wire. Cap off the end that goes through the bolt with either a wheel collar, or solder a washer on. You can solder on a steering arm, and you'll be good to go. Just drill and tap out a hole in the bottom of your fuse, and ensure that you have a plywood plate to reinforce the area. |

Had to cut another set of stab cores as the ones I had done had a couple of imperfections.I had some really low density foam so I gave that a go. They came ot 3 gms lighter (9gm) each than the earlier ones which already used fairly low density. My foam supplier offers 5 grades of density from super low density to high density. You can see how big the beads on the left are and also some air gaps. I am not sure about these cores but as long as they dont crush in the bag they should be OK. I am now running my pump at its lowest level 12 inches of mercury. So I might test my backup pump which has a commercial vac sensor and try and reduce the vaccuum to 10 inches of mercury. The stab skins weighed 45gms unpainted and here they are with 4 coats of tinted buterate (sanded after 2) and now weigh 46 gms. I was surprised at this and checked my scales which were OK. Rod |

Here is the filler /glue I use for these foam and balsa situations. The black pot is acrylic paint test pot for tinting the filler. The PU glue gives the filler a really nice consistency. Rod |

On with the stab skins. I reinforced the ply inserts with glass as usual. But used 75gm glass instead of 200gm. I have been building DLG's recently and it really makes a big difference to weight if you roll off the excess resin into paper towels. Rod Last edited by Rod; 04-15-2008 at 04:12 AM. |

Here are the stabs out of the bag. There is evidence of slight crushing around the tail tube supports at the root but a little sanding will eliminate that. Weight 39gms and 40 gms. I wish I had weighed the original stabs. I don't think I would use such light cores again but they seem OK so far. Also I think I will use only enough micro balloons to give a good tinting. I will cut off the rudder clearance chamfers soon so I can test the skin to foam bond. Rod |
