Well...
this is a Big CAD project!
i would highly recomend you to try design a small airplane and see how it goes
there are some dxf/dwg files over the internet you can use to start with
i use solid works and pro E i think those are the most easy softwere to use for 3d objects design
AUTOCAD works good but more for 2d drawings (for my opinion, i am sure its a matter of taste)

It's good to have a buddy who can help you with the basics. When I first tried some 2d CAD friend came here and spent only about an hour showing me the basics and I was taking notes. Then when I really had problems and spent countless hours trying to do something and couldn't achieve the goal he was always there to help me. If you have any trouble just ask here.

Yes, you can import the image and then draw on top of the image. Then scale it up our down til it is the size you want.

I have designed and machined in my CNC machine, i can tell you that this will need aloooot of time and knolleage... Please look at my Sukhoi if interested in Cad/CAM www.modellbyggeriet.se/sukhoi

My next project ready for machining is a small F3A machine (935mm span)

Good luck!

Don't get discouraged it is a bit to learn though at first. But with a few basic commands you can be well on your way to 2d drawing. I type my commands in because i started on CAD 6 and just stuck with the habit so I cant help you in telling you what the buttons are without looking at them but you will find that you use a few commands over and over and will allow you to get most everything done.

Line - L or line
Trim - Trim
Extend - Extend
Circle - Circle
Spline - Spline (play around with this, you will use it for many aircraft related curves) I use it a lot to import a picture and "trace" over it. It's like bending apiece of wire, you can get any shape you want.)
Many commands you can just type in at the command bar.
If you seearch hard you will even find dxf drawings of airfoils on line.

Good luck
