Too small to be sfg's there probably to reduce wing tip vortecie's. Trying to reduce drag to get every extra knot of airspeed for the air racing. They look similar to wing tips of the a-320.

Ooops. I new that edge looked different. So its A Velox.. That explains it.. I didn't think those wing tips would work on a Edge. because the Edge has the the counter balanced aleron tips. |

I could be wrong but that doesnt look like Peter Besenyei in that plane, he flies an Extra300 doesnt he? Edit: why fly high is correct, i see that he flew an edge in Dhubi, his hair looks blonde in that pic!

I found this info which may or may not shed some light on those wingtips: Small winglets may be utilized, mainly to increase pressures on the outboard aileron and thus improve roll rate. The winglets have a secondary role to reduce induced drag, which translates into reduced energy losses during high-G maneuvers. In order to function at both positive and negative G, the winglets will be symmetrical airfoils rigged at zero incidence and will need to be highly swept to cope with the widely varying flow conditions at the wing tip.

I saw him fly this on one of the RedBull Airrace episodes on FSN man this little thing can cook it has nearly the same if not better power to weight ratio of the edge 540.

Partially incorrect. For the same lift, the total vortex strength across the span is always the same. Lift is vorticity. You can't reduce it - but you can redistribute it. The one and only purpose of properly designed winglets is an equivalent increase in span and reduced induced drag. The reduction in drag is not from a reduction in vorticity. They are very hard to design right and in most cases they hurt more than they benefit - unless you design them right. They have to be tailor fit to the wing. Since these wingtips were adapted to an existing wing (and not designed as a system), my guess is that they are hurting him more than helping. In addition, the winglets work well at a certain flight condition for which they are designed. Do airplanes such as an Edge fly at one flight condition while performing aerobatics? I don't think so. It would take a lot of work to get them right...More than those guys want to go through.

I'm thinkin' the idea is to keep air from spilling over the wing tip (producing wing tip vortecies) and forcing it over the aileron for a better roll rate. Tod |
