Saw Hoover fly up in Reno for many years with the Shrike. For something that was never intended to fly aerobatics he always put on such a awesome show. I remember the last year he was there the Faa would not let him fly alone. So one of the Faa guys has to be with him I believe. I have his book and its very interesting what he did in aviation. Without him I bet we would have been a lot farther behind.

The way Bob flew his routines never really stressed the airframes beyond their approved structural limits. No snaps, or high G turns, everything was smooth as silk. An old video showed him pouring a glass of iced tea while doing multiple barrel rolls (not snaps or aileron rolls, but barrel rolls where the plane was always loaded to +1g) never spilled a drop.

I saw his routine years ago at Seymour-Johnson AFB. Absolutely awesome.

Not many people may know this, but he was one of the test pilots at Muroc (Edwards) during the years after WWII, and I believe he was one of the pilots in line behind Yeager to break the sound barrier. They are very close friends, and in fact Hoover was scheduled to do a fly-over in a Mustang at General Yeager's retirement, but could not due to weather.

There is a saying: "There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots". Doesn't apply to Hoover and Yeager. I'm sure there is luck involved, but I'm also sure it was their skill as well.
