Re: My ride to the RENO AIR RACES!!!
Just got back from the 07 Reno Air Races and as most have heard already, it was a sad situation that replayed itself on a daily basis. On Tuesday, David's Rose's Peregrine Bipe, piloted by Steve Dari from Lemon Ca, had engine problems on climb-out and difficulties resulted in a fatal crash. Cliff's name was on the turtle deck of this aircraft as he participated in its construction years ago.
On Thursday, Cliff's "Violated #25" was the pace plane for the faster race that resulted in a fatal crash of Brad Morehouse's L-39 on the first lap. Brad's "Dino Juice" might have had some severe turbulence very close to the ground in turn one. He was probably 300 yds. from us when his plane flew into the ground at what I'm sure was 450+mph speed. The races were suspended the rest of the day.
On Friday, Jason Somes was clipped from behind by Gary Hubler in the Formula 1 race shorty before 10am. Gary went in immediately and Jason was able to guide his plane to a landing with what sounded like severe flutter. the races were suspended the rest of the day.
I'm home now and getting the results of the races from the net.
