Steve's watch was not a GPS watch if it was the one he has been saved by before. It is a Breitling watch that Transmits on 121.5 mhz just like his ELT. And by transmit it means sending out an emergency location signial. Here is the link: http://www.breitling.com/en/ As for the batteries going bad in his ELT. Whos knows??? But for the two forms of Emergency Beacons to not be used??? Things don't look good. Chuck

The search for downed aviator Steve Fossett, whose light aircraft failed to return to its western Nevada ranch base on Monday, both broadened and intensified through Thursday night and into Friday. The C-130 of the Air National Guard from Reno continued its sorties across an increasing search area, including throughout the night using infrared detection equipment; the Nevada Civil Air Patrol flying from Minden airport expanded their total search territory to an area of some 20,000+ square miles; plus a growing squadron of approximately 10 - 12 helicopters from volunteers, chartered aircraft and the Army National Guard flew from the Flying M Ranch on a 'low and slow' search of mountainous terrain within a 50-80 nm radius of the ranch, made both difficult and physically demanding because of strong ground turbulence. Additional volunteer helicopter observers coming from the pilot ranks of the just-completed Reno Balloon Races as well as from the Fossett LSR, Cheyenne sailing and other Steve Fossett projects were arriving at the Flying M throughout Friday to lend their assistance. Its getting very serious now, but yea as said below! Maybe he did want to get away!!????

. I doubt he would "disappear" in a manner that would put many of his friends lives at risk searching for him. . . . . That part of the country is very treacherous flying. . . . .

Very few pilots file flight plans because most are just on local flights. Joy riding, building time, looking for a new place to duck hunt etc... Besides the problem with them is if you don't close them within 30 min of you final destination they start looking for you. When they find out you failed to close your plan you can get into trouble with the FAA. How much trouble I don't know. So most guys on crosscountry trips use flight following and terminate when they have the runway insight or when the controllers are just routing them way around busy airspace and they are close to their destination and know their way home. Fossett essentially was on a non route mission (local flight). So he probably would not have bothered with any type of FAA service. Other that the normal transponder mode which is a joke any way. There are so many variables that all speculation is just that. Evidently the media doesn't know a whole lot either because the reporting is sparse at best. We all hope this comes out well.
