So why such a high speed impact into a mountain?
Was there IMC at Mammoth lakes the day he went missing?

It could have been several reasons. He could have had a heart attack and went in WFO for all we know. Then there is the fact he was flying a very light, underpowered aircraft into a very unforgiving area. He could have got sucked in by wind currents, or just run out of energy in fast rising terrain etc etc. I had the pleasure of meeting him once, and it is sad something like this happened to such a great guy.
