Duh! I didn't know your FG handle, Mike!

I did not recall that you were PIC on that demo flight. You're speaking of the one from the old Hopewell airport?

OK will you please explain that for all the people that do not work for the FAA
I have no idea what all that means

I don't work for the FAA, but I will give it a shot. Ultralights are covered by part 103 of the FAA regulations. To be a Ultralight you have to have a empty weight of no more than 254 lbs. There used to be a provision to allow training for ultralight pilots using a 2 seat ultralight type airplane. They were to be used for training only. Many people were bending the rules, and using them for other reasons. When you saw a 2 seat ultralight you would not know if it was being flown within the regulations or not. The FAA decided to make all 2 seat airplanes have to be registered with the FAA. The FAA created a new class of aircraft called Light Sport aircraft. If you had an existing 2 seat ultralight you could move it into the new light sport class. The deadline is the end of Jan 2008, but the process already needs to be started. There are going to be a bunch of unregistered 2 seat airplanes on the market that are going to look like really good deals, but they will have passed the deadline to be converted and illegal to fly.

We've got several that come to the field occasionally and some are based just up the road at another field. Check out the firefly, and some of the other products from http://www.tnkolbaircraft.com/ for some of the most popular around here. That said, the guys that fly them really love the "low and slow" of flight. However, one guy just spent a hair more and moved up into a Cessna 150 for $14,000 and with some TLC it looks almost like new. Of course, you've got to have some place to keep it and a runway or an airport hanger.

If you have a pilots certificate already why dont you just purchase a Cessna 150/152 or similar airplane? Its going to cost you less, be more reliable and be easier/cheaper to insure.

Do a search for each airplane you are interested in on barnstormers.com you will find several of each for sale and you will see what I mean about the cost of buying/building a challenger or tornado and a good low time since overhaul Cessna 150/152.

You would think... But then I know what a 150 costs.

a new cylinder every three years ==$1500
Annual == $700
Insurance $650
Fuel $3.50 - $5.00 a gal.
(burns 6 gal an hour)
Transponder inspection =$250
Medical = $90

I don't see a Cessna being a recreational plane anymore.

Sport pilot is the way to go for a weekend flier such as myself.
