Help! Calling ultralight pilots...

Thought about getting a nice Harley, but the wife is dead set against it. So I have the clearance to get an ultralight. She said if I'm gonna get killed, it is not gonna be by some idiot on the road.
Anyhow, I have been looking at my options, and have found two that really have caught my interest.
The first is a Titan Tornado II. http://www.titanaircraft.com/aircraft.php?aircraft_id=3

The second choice is a Challenger II. http://www.challenger.ca/airplane.html

Now, how hard is a kit to put together? Would I be better off buying a used one? What kind of hidden costs are involved? And how hard is it to process the registration?

First Carnardman - I'd like to suggest you change the signature you have showing on your posts regarding crashes.

Lucky devil. I think I already said you married damn well! Whoo Ahaa!! to ya.

I thought an Ultralight had to be under 250#'s? You going to need some degree of licensing for those choices? I personally would rather have a helmet and open cockpit - but it rarely does get frigid cold here in sunshine state.

You are gonna have to come to Central Fla in April for Sun N Fun. The largest homebuilders flyins. Talk to the owners and maybe get a test flight ! Best exposure for what is out there for the choosing -workshops showing building techniques and processes. The air show is not to be missed either.

Okay all I can say about the choosing stuff would be :
Titian -looks HOT!!

Not a problem, I have my Private S.E.L. Also have +100 hrs in a Cessna 150, and about 3 in an Ercoupe. I figure a high wing kit should be stable, easy to fly, and characteristics similar to a C150. I just don't want to budget one, and find out it is going to run thousands more than expected.

Went to Oshkosh in 03 and 04. Had no interest in them then. Sad because there were thousands there.

Guess I'll have to dig out the old FAR/AIM and see what the regs are for ultralights.

I'm interested in ultralights too, except I'm in the middle of the city with nowhere to fly (I'm like a half-mile from DFW International). I'd have to drive a looong way to get to where I could goof around in one of those...

I also had the chance to fly a Grob sailplane once... I REALLY love the feeling of flying in small planes like that. Once in a while it's nice to get your feet off the ground

iv done a fair amount of research recently on this subject, and found ever those with pvt lic should take the sport pilot corse do to flight differences.. and i think the new sport regs would fall under the aircraft noted.. i was looking into powerd hanggliding, and man again, i know theres a instrutor here local so i can check it out anytime, good luck and get back to simple flying!

I've flown UL's for 24 yrs..... Ain't nothing like it,,,, for the ULTIMATE AIRGASM...
I love to fly 'em "low & slow"... Although I haven't flown since '04, thats when I had a major "brain-fart". Dr. said I shouldn't fly anymore... So for now,,, R/C will do.

After the end of JAn. 2008 any 2 seat aircraft will have to have "N" numbers on it. If it is an already existing 2 seat ultralight it can be moved into the E-LSA catergory, but the deadline for starting that process is already here. If you buy an already flying aircraft make sure the paper work is done, or you may be buying an unusable piece of junk. If you build and it is a 51% airplane make sure you register it EXP AB. Tom
