OK now we are going to talk about real horse power vs what is told over the loud speakers at airshows. First of all you can get just as much juice out of a 540 then 580 and the 540 is lighter. That is why you will only see people with full Lycoming sponsorship people running the 580. My motor is a parallel valve narrow deck 540 with 11:1 pistons in it. It was built by Lycon they are the only shop that goes above 10:1 in the country that has a reliability record. They built Jim's motor and Seans. At 11:1 the motor is dynoed at 380HP but by the time it is mounted 350 is a realistic number. Then from there you put on your bio 400hp cause it sounds better then 380. Just like nobodies plane is as light or rolls as fast as they say. Remember it is a show not a contest |

yes yes i know and kindof figured that i was just wondering how high or how much juice as you would say is possible and yes i would figure around were they are now is the limit i completly understand the whole show thing and you are right 400 does soud alot better but heres anothe question my fathers f-150 for instance is a v8 it produces about 300 hp and is something like 312 cubic inches why do air craft engines use so much more ci for a relativly small boost in hp is it because there producing the lightest engine possible that limits what you can do idk i think its an interesting question though or are the aircraft engines producing loads of torque

i hope i did not stop this thread any way i think i figured it out the bouve question is that airplane engines like the lycoming produce the hp ar much lower rpm any way is there any time table for when we may see the mxs on the circut looks so awsome by the way i hope to be showing off the latest and greatest aerobatic planes as soon as i can just awsome stuff

Yes Lycoming engines produce power at lower RPM's. To do this the pistons are 3 times the size of that what is found in your standard auto V8. 2600 RPM it typically max in an airplane. In our high performance motors we take them to 2,900 RPM. By pumping up the motors and running them at higher RPMs time between over hauls is 500 hours ish compared to a standard non aerobatic 540 you can get 2000 hours out of them. There will be 2 production MXS flying in Redbull next season, I know that is not wide open aerobatics. There are no plans to fly the prototype in any airshows yet, but I think some how you might see it pop up in a few hint hint. For sure Alan Bush will be flying it in competitions this year. It will be at the Sebring FL contest in May 1,2,3. The contest does not run on Sunday. |

Hey Paul, I bet I'll just have to attend the Sebring event. Think I should enter basic with the Citabria?
